He wants to escape. He's bored. Give him something to chew on.

Don't worry! My hamster does this at night, when she's usually awake, pretty often.

What it wants (as you probably know by now) is to have a bit of fun!

Does it have a wheel? If not, buy it one, but make sure it doesn't have GIANT gaps in it. I've seen some where the hamster can't even grab the rails to run and just keeps falling through.

Again, give it some toys, like an empty toilet paper roll (check for paper left on it first), or some wooden toys you can find in your pet store. Even some wooden chopsticks are good. You can find those in almost an Chinese restaurant.

Also, an little hamster ball is perfect. You can put your hamster in it while you clean it's cage and just let is roam around a bit.

And the most important thing: don't forget the spend some time with you hamster! Even little animals like hamster need love.

Honestly, all the chew toys in the world won't stop your hamster from chewing on the bars, it's a common way for them to file their teeth down, all rodents have constant ly growing teeth, you can still provide your ham with some extra chew toys, or even a milkbone once in awhile to help him.

Get an excersize run about ball, generally once they're up and chewing on the bars they'd like some time out to play.
Or just take your hamster out and spend some quality time with it !

Do not worry, this is not serious. I also have a hamster that keeps biting his cage. It means that his or her teeth are chewing to get stronger teeth. So, I suggest getting a chew toy. You can get them from any local pet stores. Either he wants to chew to stop being bored and get his teeth strong, or he wants to escape. So you can let him in your room on the bed and keep a good eye for him, and it will work. Hamsters need to have strong teeth because they have hard food, so they need to bite through them. Do not worry, this is not a serious illness or anything like that. Good luck!! >.<

Hamsters usually chew the bars of their cage because they're bored. Give it some tubes to run around in and find treats, or you can buy some build your own cubes and tunnels to run through.

He is bored, you need to get him out of the cage EVERY DAY for a fuss and for exercise, put him in a ball for about 15 minutes to run around, hold him, talk to him, let him run around on your hands.

For when he is in the cage he needs a wheel and some other toys to keep him occupied.
Try burying some of his food or treats so he has to find it and dig for it, hide it in different areas each time, that will keep him thinking.

Go to the local toy shop and see what you can find, get a routine going with him and you will find you have a happier hammy in no time.

Don't listen to the whole he's bored thing. My hamsters had huge cages and there toys swapped everyday and they still did this. Hamsters need to gnaw down there teeth to a comfortable size and the cage bars are hard, small and easy to gnaw at. This makes them the best thing to gnaw down teeth. Don't worry he doesn't want to escape. :)

I've had this problem with my hamster. It could be a number of things, try to find ways to encourage him to chew on this to trim down his teeth.
If this doesn't work, he may be a compulsive bar chewer. If so, he needs a new barless cage. Compulsive bar chewing leads to brain damage, tooth damage, and sometimes mouth sores. My hamster is a compulsive bar chewer, and I solved this problem by making him a bin cage.
Here are good instructions on making bin cages.

Hamster teeth naturally grow continuously throughout their life. They need a chew stick to keep them shorter. If a chew stick is unavailable, they chew on the bars instead. If the teeth grow too long, they will no longer be able to eat and die of starvation.

It means he is bored. Needs more chewing toys in his cage. Do you play with him, he needs to be let out for about 15 minutes everyday. If you can't get to the petstore to get him some toys, and you have a dog, give him some of those hard dog biscuits, or a toilet paper roll. These are cheap alternatives to those expensive hamster toys. Also, make sure he has a wheel in his cage, if not, this can lead to cage paralasys, or depression from boredom and lack of exercise

And hamsters don't eat cheese, they don't eat dairy, cheese is not healthy for them and can make them sick
