I'm looking into buying a female dumbo eared rat and have a few questions to ask for those who already have them as a pet.

1] How big will she get?
2] What is the best home for her? [aquarium/hamster home/ect?]
3] What type of food do rats perfer, and can they digest fruits and vegtables? [Such as trailmix, ect.]
4] Reccomended toys?
5] What types of bedding have you found works best for your rat?
6] Is maintaining a rat costly?

I saved a life, and got a female mouse. The only kind they had were the white ones with red eyes. What should I name her? I was thinking about naming her Snowball because she is white. I also liked Ruby because she has red eyes...........Which do you like better?

My Brother and Sister-in-law found an injured field mouse outside their house. At first it looked barely alive - kind of just led their twitching but every so often would scurry around before returning to being led still twitching.

Next day (Today) it seems alot better, no more twitching but we've noticed that both of its back legs appear broken / dislocated / twisted

Question: Will the Vet beable to do anything - like realign its legs or something similar to what you can do with people with broken bones or would they put it down?

It doesnt appear to be in pain because it does move around a lot - although its not really running, kind of rolls without using its back legs - What should we do with it? Dont want to risk the vet just putting it down because its just a field mouse.

I want to get a rodent that's:

-REALLY quiet at night
-friendly
-clean
-requires a small cage
-cheap

I want to put it in my room, so I need to know these things. Which would you recommend? Please add pros and cons!
Also, tell me how much it would cost a month for food, bedding, etc.

(No big rodents, like guinea pigs, chichillas and ferrets!)

Thanks! Best answer goes to whoever helps me the most!

Hi, I'm thinking about getting a Syrian/golden/teddy bear (whatever you want to call it) hamster. I have a few questions about them so if you have ever owned hamsters or taken care of them your help would be greatly appreciated. :)

1. I know hamsters are nocturnal and most active at night, but what time do they usually wake up, that I could handle/play with them? (I don't want to have to wait until super super late.)
2. I have a 10 gallon tank right now, would this be an okay place to keep a Syrian? Or would I need a larger one, or a cage?
3. Are hamsters very noisy at night? I'm a fairly light sleeper; do you think the noise would be enough to keep me up if I kept the hamster in my bedroom?

Thanks for any answers, also if you have any advice or personal experiences to share that would be awesome also!

Don't you just want to throttle those ignorant people who still hate rats because of the stigma attached to them with being Plague carriers and living in sewers etc?

I'm amazed at how I've managed to stay calm with some of those humans.

Ok, I have a problem. We bought two boy rats about 3 weeks ago now and we are keeping them in an aquarium,I'm not sure of the size but I know its too small for them. Now I thought this was just a temporary measure until we got a good cage for them or at least a "tank topper" but my boyfriend said the other night that that was going to be their permanant home! He said he might put a mesh top on it but not extend it in any way. When I asked why he said "because if it has no cover you will be able to smell them"Now correct me if I am wrong but doesn't an aquarium with a wooden top smell worse than a cage with bars?!?! He also wanted to know why I was getting so worked up over a couple of rodents who only have a lifespan of two or so years and I asked how he'd feel spending his whole life in a glass bubble.
Ok, sorry about that, I suppose my question is: How do I convince him to at least put an extension on the tank (tank topper or otherwise) or get a good cage? Any ideas or websites.

I've heard rats aren't so tempted to fight if they're neutered.

So, I went to PetCo and Petsmart today and found a good quality bird cage for much less than a 'small animal' cage. My question is, if I take out the grate on the bottom and secure the easy-sliding side doors to the cage with wire so the rats can't open them, can I substitute this cage for a rat cage?
I'm planning on putting in ledges and landings and such around the cage so the rats have a smaller chance of falling as well.

There is a huge litter of white rats at my local animal shelter and I really want to adopt one. I've been researching about pet rats for about 8 years and I've finally convinced my parents that I can take care of one. Is there any specific cage that is good for rats? What kind of toys do they like (I know toys they can chew on, but any more specific suggestions)? Does anyone have any helpful hints about caring for ratties (I'm going to buy one of those pet rat care books, but still)? Thank you!

We got a new guinea pig about 24 hrs ago. I've read everything I can find online about what she should n shouldnt eat, play with etc..She's eating fine and seems to be a happy piggy. My only concern is water. The water level in the bottle doesnt seem to have moved. Even after her 'floor time' (exercise/play) in a large pen with a different water bottle she didnt drink. How much do piggys drink? Do they need specially treated water? Should I be worried or is she possibly still settling in?
