Get him from the humane society.
They are healthier.
Look at it this way: The hamster at the pet store is never taken out of his cage, never played with or given attention. And the hamster at the humane society is taken out every day, given plenty of love and affection, so he will probably be more friendlier and healthier.
Best of luck :)

Get the one at the humane society if it seems healthy and friendly -- doesn't bite, etc. The ones at the pet store probably haven't been handled much and aren't as likely to be "sociable." The above advice about keeping them separated is true. They will fight. Even if you put them in one cage that's separated by wire mesh, they'll try to get at each other through the wire. You only want to put them together for the right reason at the right time -- and for only a short time -- if the one at the humane society isn't too old. If you do decide to mate them, get a book first and read up on them. You can find a small, inexpensive paperback at most any pet store. Or just research them on the Web. But remember, it only takes about 16 days for them to reproduce. You could be overrun with them in no time, and each of the little ones will have to have it's own separate cage before long, too. And it's not as easy as you might think to give them away. I used to raise them when I was younger.

Well, unless you want alot of babies you should keep your hamsters seperate. Also they will fight. Look at the one at the Humane Society first and see how you like it. Handle it and see how sociable it is, if it bites, personality, healthfullness, etc. Then go to the one at the pet store. Check that one out for the same qualities. Make a decision about which one you'd prefer to have. It is always a good idea to buy from the humane society, but sometimes an animal was brought there for a reason and isn't friendly.

honey, it's a very noble gesture to adopt a pet from the humane society...right now there are 410 homeless hamsters on http://www.petfinder.com; if we all adopted a hamster instead of buying from a pet store, I feel that would not only help a lot of homeless hamsters but we would also give a lot of thoughtless hamster breeders some food for thought (cats and dogs aren't the only animals that are being over-bred, many hamsters have been put to sleep simply because there are too many to find homes for them all!)
If it was me, I'd adopt the poor little guy at the shelter; in fact the two hamsters I have right now are hamsters I adopted from the shelter in our area. They have been the light of my life since I brought them home many months ago...
do what you feel is right for you, I've never bought a pet from a pet store or a breeder-I always adopt, but that's my personal choice, and now is the time for you to make yours:
what ever you decide, it needs to be the right decision for you

Get it from the humane society. Unless your humane society isn't good and the animals are unhealthy.
Try not to buy ANY small pet from a pet store. They could end up being females and having babies. Have you seen a pet store mice cage overcrowded with mice and their BABIES?? I have.
