Don't you just want to throttle those ignorant people who still hate rats because of the stigma attached to them with being Plague carriers and living in sewers etc?
I'm amazed at how I've managed to stay calm with some of those humans.

Yeah.. I just answered a question not too long ago, a woman asked a question asking if she should get one. In my answer I warned her that people would tell her dont get them, theyre gross, etc etc. I submitted my answer and sure enough, there was already an answer that said 'are you nuts!! they spread diseases!!!!" I say, if you've never owned a pet, and clearly know nothing about them, dont answer questions about them just to spread your ignorance. My rats arent dirty, my rats dont spread diseases. My rats are like little rodent puppies who just want to be loved like any other animal. I feel sorry for them every time I look into their cute little faces and know how many people would cause them harm if they could , just because of the bad rep that rats have. But hey, I do my part to keep my babies safe, and spread the word that rats are NOT gross, and do NOT, spread diseases. I wish everyone could just get over their hatred and spend just one hour with one of these delightful little creatures. I think that'd change alot of minds.

Oh, yes, yes. I've managed to stay calm on the outside, but on the inside, I'm exploding. When people come over, "Oh, you have a mouse?" "Rat." "Eeeew, don't you know it probably has rabies? Dump it outside and get a hamster instead. They're MUCH cuter and MUCH safer." I politely tell them something in the rats' defense, but on the inside I just explode in anger of their ignorance.
How many people still don't know that rats can't contract rabies, won't do anything else to scare off intruders but chtter their teeth, can actually be trained to play basketball (down here in Columbus, a place called Cosi actually did), and are the most tame and loving pets? <3 rats.

I know exactly what you mean, people are so fixated on the stereotype that rats are rabies infested, sewer-living, garbage eating, nasty things that live in the cities. That can be true, but there is a difference between wild, city rats and domesticated pet rats. Some people are just very narrow minded.

i wouldnt want to throttle them as people are intitled to their opinions - some people hate cats,dogs,snakes,spiders.
ive owned a rat and he was lovely - very affectionate - there is a stigma attached and they cant seperate the sewer wild rat to the pet - even tho the wolf is obv know as the wild dog , tiger as the wild cat etc....
rats are intelligent and yes you may get a biter but then look at hamsters they are often biters !! and my mate had one who was friendly and cuddly !!
it is always the tail that people hate - i dont get it - dogs and cats have tail ?? that confuses me !!
oh well cant change their minds lol

No I don't want to throttle anybody for disliking rats- the way I see it is- they are my pets, and I love them, and nobody said that you have to love them too! Hollywood has sensationalized the stigma on rats, and of course people are closed minded and chose to believe in such stigmas.
Ignore it, who cares what anyone else thinks- I know you'll defend owning rats as pets- (I do it too) but in the end..ewwwww rat people will remain ewwwwww rat people. Oh well thier loss!

Yes, yes, I know what you mean.
I've seen a lot of people answering questions with things like "eww, why would you want a rat? Get a hamster, they're cuter!", and "rats carry diseases and smell bad, they're gross."
...When in reality, they get diseases just as often as a hamster or mouse, or any other pet--and when they do, they're never human-transferable. They don't smell like much, either, especially the females.
Rats are almost like little puppies <3. Best alternative for me, since my little brother's allergic to real dogs.

I suspect that most ppl who hate, fear & misunderstand rats have never actually known one. For the most part, as you know, rats are charming, smart & affectionate-- our little hooded girl gives me as many enthusiastic kisses as any puppy would, our PEW boys are perfect snuggly gentlerats & our hairless girl is a natural comic.
It surprises me whenever I'm in a petshop & over ppl saying things like 'eww, gross' when they're near the rats. Last Halloween, I had our boys on my shoulder for a bit when I gave out treats & we got the whole range of reactions--- everything from 'awwww, cute' to 'omg, are those *rats*?'

well to be onest and true ...... i dont like rats for one my mom has 3 rats and they keep biteting me and it hurts !!well they dont bite the others. before u trow insult cause i dont like rats im going to explain to u why im answering this questions aldo i dont like rats! first of all i respect the little creature i respect every creature! they do have a cute face but to me there mean!! i not a ignorant person i love all creatures just rats are not my type of animal!! i can understand that u like rats its your choice and u get to deside i cant stop u from liking what u like and i acept that !!
i already tried to like the rats i guess there not my type of animal! i know rats dont like me so why botter
so now if u want to trow insalts do it !! its not my fault there not my type
oh ya and to answer your questions i dont like people that are ignorant and that want to kill rats even if they dint to anything. i got bite so often by rats....but it still gives no excuse to kill the poor things and what ever!! u do your choice i do my choice people who kill rats or bye them for snake food are just plain cruel. that all

I used to have a pair of white rats. They were the schools , I took them home for the summer and break times. No one wanted to deal with them because they were rats. I found them very lovable and charming. My mother was scared of them also, eventually she warmed up to them and welcomed them home when the school was closed.Yes they stayed with our family until they passed away from old age. I loved them very much.Good luck with your rats.

I am a rat lover too! But I understand that some people are icked out by them, that's their problem not mine but I do my best to let people know what good pets they make and how lovable they can be. They are so smart, lovable, trainable and just all around exalant pets. I wish more people knew that, but we can't convince everyone, darn it.
