Unsafe beddings:
Cedar (Pretty much the worst stuff you can get)
Pine (Some people say that kiln-dried pine is alright; I can't confirm or deny this)
Yes, they CAN cause respiratory illnesses and organ damage. People like them because they cover up bad odors, but it's just selfish--why risk your pet's life just to make his cage smell nicer?
Safe beddings:
Aspen (Widely available, I'm using it currently for my rats and my rabbit--smells pretty good, too)
Hemp (A little harder to find, but works well)
Carefresh (Many pet stores now carry this, it's excellent stuff)
Corncob (Never used this, but it should be OK)
Yesterday's News (Never used it either, but again, it's fine as bedding)
You can use shredded, unscented kleenex as nesting material ^-^.

Hamsters are in the rodent family. Rodents like to build a nest. The stuff you mentioned is o.k. for them to build a nest but long term will not hold up. It would have to be changed often to keep bugs and mites under control. Use natural wood chips, the cedar type because it will keep lice and bugs away naturally. Keep it clean and dry. I always used a kitty litter scoop to clean it out. This can be recycled in a garden or the woods or just put in a paper bag and out to the trash. Then I would use an old sponge and some warm soapy water to clean up any thing that got "stuck" to the cage. I always kept mine in a glass tank since litter tends to get kicked out all over the room. Never use kitty litter or anything like it as the dust from it will be breathed in by the hamster and will kill it. Keep a water bottle full of clean water. If the water is too old it will get slime in it and the hamster will become sick.

It's okay as nesting material, but for bedding it would be best to use the recycled paper material. It's gray in color, and is better suited for hamsters than any other commercially available product. The pine bedding is bad for hamsters not because of the smell... it is the pine oils that irritate their skin and could cause health problems.

The best kind of bedding is Carefresh Bedding. Any kind of it is good. It is all natural, soft, and absorbent. The types of bedding you DON'T want is pine, scented, or unnatural. These can hurt your hamster. Kleenex or toilet paper is good too. Just make sure the tissues aren't any special kind, like ones with lotion in them. Hope your hamster is happy!

You need to get bedding that if the hamster eats it it will be easily digested. NEVER EVER USE CEDAR OR PINE BEDDING BECAUSE IT CAN CAUSE SERIOUS RESPIRATORY ISSUES IN HAMSTERS ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE NO WARNING LABELS THEY ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. Apsen is the best bedding that can be used. You can also use a bedding called Carefresh.

IGNORE all of the people above who said to use anything other than CareFRESH. Especially that person who said to use Frosted Flakes. Those contain sugar, and hamsters can get diabetes, especially dwarf hamsters.
CareFRESH is the best bedding you can use in my opinion.

Yeah use shavings, but i would always give my hamster a old toilet paper roll and and old sock that has a couple holes in it. In fact any old ripped up pieces of cloth is good for them to make a bed in, but they like to hide in dark areas too, so kleenex box or something is good to put the old cloth in for them.
