They don't smell *that* bad & are more than cute enough to compensate for the smell. The cage will need to be cleaned frequently unless/until the ferret is litter-trained, as they seem to 'go' a *lot*.
Ours lived for over 7 years & was a total sweetheart. I gave her a bath once a week (sometimes twice in hot weather) & she hated it for the 1st few months but really seemed to enjoy it after that. Actually, it was more like a 'shower' in the sink. They have ferret shampoo but you can also use something made for kittens. Afterwards I'd put her in the empty bathtub along with a clean towel & she'd roll around on it til she was dry. Cute & convenient ;-)
For treats & training, your best friend is a product called Ferretone-- a slightly stinky vitamin tonic that is like candy to most ferrets. I'd put a few drops on our girls tummy whenever her claws needed a trim-- you gotta re-apply for each paw. I wish they had something similar for cats, lol. I think the maximum daily dose is 2 tsp. daily but a few drops here & there can be really helpful.
Litter training can take *lots* of time & patience (not to mention Ferretone) but it helps a *lot* with keeping the cage cleaner. With our girl, I think it took a couple of weeks & I had to pretty much clean the cage *every* time she made a mistake so she'd get the idea. Like with kittens, praise & reward your ferret for going in the right place & if you catch him/her making a mistake, quickly put the little guy into the litter box. Once they associate using the box with attention & treats, they are really good about using it whether you are there to reward them or not. Like kittens, they won't want to use it if it's not clean enough (but the box needs to have a 'reminder' in it for the first couple of weeks, so don't 'over-clean it), & like kittens, a clever individual might *pretend* to use the box in order to get an extra treat!

They don't stink if you keep up with them. Clean the cage once a week, and give him a bath too. Other then that they are pretty easy. Oh, and make sure to get him a vitamin supplement for ferrets from your vet or pet supply store. They really need this, especially as pups.

they're going to tension you nuts. They dig and that they get into the settee and below the dishwasher and different risky circumstances. they do in contrast to muddle containers, who prefer to lower back up against the wall and poop up the wall. They smell like skunks and not something facilitates it wanting on a regular basis cage cleansing and changing their bedding on a regular basis. They value extra desirable than a canines to feed and vet. They savor leaping on your food and landing in the midst of your plate or grabbing and dealing. If that doesn't placed you off the sturdy element is they do no longer might desire to be biters. I raised my ferret on my own as a singleton and he's many times unfastened selection. He performs with me and the canines, no different ferrets. He sleeps in my mattress often times. He has under no circumstances bitten all and sundry. while human beings are over the main he does is a working bounce on the lower back of their legs to get them to play. Its the cutest element ever. human beings frequently question me if he bites and tell me they pay attention ferrets are biters yet my guy is definately no longer a biter. i think of the extra you advance them as a housepet and the fewer time they spend by ability of themselves in a cage very much contributes to their temperment around human beings.
