I have a friend and she likes to put Pam on her hamster wheel to stop it from squeaking. I don't know that much about the cooking oil but I do know that some subtances that are okay for us are poisonous to hamsters. Her hamster is addicted to the cooking spray and I'm worried about him. He always licks it off when she puts on she thinks nothing of saying: "Oh, hamsters won't get poisoned from cooking oil, you're a worry wart" I just want to know if I am worrying unnessecarily.

The pet shop said that he had mites in the past and had been treated. I presumed that the strange growths were scars but after finding this site with a picture that exactly matched my rat,

http://www.xs4all.nl/~tirion/Medical.html

i have realised that he has something called sarcoptic mites. Does anybody know anything about these? I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow, what sort of treatment will he get?
The page i read says that the mites can pass to himans which worried me too.

my hamster is really lethargic all the sudden. usually he runs and runs in his wheel, or in his ball but lately he spends A LOOOT of his time sleeping. weve had him for about 6 months, and he wasnt old when we bought him...so i dont know whats wrong. nothing in his diet has changed, and we havent put anything new in his cage, or taken anything out. the only thing we can think of is that he is cold or something, because we left the windows open near him on a cold night by accident. any help would be appreciated.

I've been looking for ferret cages on the internet. I'm not sure what size they need. I know alot of people try putting them in those little rabbit cages and I know better than that but what size is best. Also where can I find affordable cages. Maybe they are all expensive but I can't find one reasonable enough to want to buy. Have any suggestions of where I can get a decent one that isn't going to cost an arm and a leg?

I am thinking about buying thi product:LM Animal Farms Daily Liquid Multi-Vitamins for Guinea Pigs. I was wondering if I really needed it or if my piggie could live without it. The reviews are good ( you can find them on petco.com) but I am not sure I really need it.

well I had a hamster that a friend gave me and It was in a wooden cage, well what do you know... The hamster made a hole and escaped. I have no idea where it could be. It has been roaming my house and I havent seen it, and at times i wonder if it is still alive. My friend should have known better than giving me a wooden cage since I dont know about hamsters. Anyways I really liked that hamster so much and Im thinking about getting me another one, well I just wanted to know which kind is the best as pets?k thanks

I'm planning to get a pet rat within the next month or so. I've had plenty of other pets, but never a rodent.

I have a fairly large, three-level rat cage. It's used, but has been washed and is in very good condition. I also have cedar for bedding.

I have two cats; one is 16 years old and very laid-back, the other is just under a year old, very curious and playful. She's been playing in the cage since I brought it home; very curious about the scents on it -- I can't smell it, but she obviously can!

I intend to get a young male rat. What can I expect, and what do I need to know? It's my understanding that rats are highly intelligent; are they trainable? Can they be taught to use a litter box, or anything similar? Do they need to be bathed, and how often? Should they be kept in the cage most of the time, or can they safely be allowed out for extended periods? (how do I rat-proof the room?)

Any advice from experienced owners would be great ;)

Ok, I know rats are awesome and have had them. But my brother was feeding two of those tiny white feeder mice to his lizards... they wouldn't eat them so I took them in as pets! I hate seeing animals suffer. Anyway my main question, do they get bigger or do they stay a little bigger than the end of someones thumb? How long do they live? Are they similar to rats? Now I know how to care for rats! I just couldn't leave these guys! Thanks!

Okay, I'm outside my house sitting on my porch minding my own business when I see this squirrel. Naturally I take no notice of it, but then he starts staring it me, like he's crazy or something. I look around to see if he might be staring at somebody else, but it's me. I go inside after a minute or two, and there he is, looking through the window. I see him at the store, outside my job, he's everywhere. I took a vacation to my friends house in Wisconsin, and there he was, the same damn squirrel. Do you think I should contact proper authorities?

so i got 2 hairless rats, 2 days ago. and i've already started holding them, because they have just BEGGED for attention 24/7 since the second i got them home. they let me pick them up, they let me pet them, they let me put their lotion on (since they're hairless and their skin needs special attention). they "groom" me, etc....
but what are some ways i can play with them? oreo is my active little explorer. he never sits still, and enjoys running all over me, including trying to get inside my shirt/pants! (typical boy...lol). but jack is slightly calmer. he likes to run all over too, but he also likes to cuddle, and just lay down on me.
what are some things i can do with them, other than just letting them run around on me? do they actually have fun doing that?
links are welcome, but give me some of your own ideas too that you do with your rats or rodents!!

i just got 2 rats last night, and their names are oreo and jack. jack is the little baby, who always looks sleepy and who falls asleep when i rub his head. (SO CUTE!!!!) and oreo is the little stinker who NEVER STOPS MOVING! lol
anyways, i've been trying to get them used to me, so i've been sticking my hands in their cage and feeding them treats and letting them walk all over my hands and nibble them. and i've also been sticking my face in the opening of the cage. so they sniff all over my and lick me and stuff, but they also try and groom my bangs! lol i think it's adorable but why do they do that? lol they lick it and fuss around with it with their paws and it's like they're slicking it down and combing it with their paws lol.
why do they do it?

okay, so i have had rats before, but it was 2 years ago, and i can't really remember much about how to take care of them.
i just got 2 so-ugly-they're-adorable hairless rats last night!!!! their names are jack and oreo. i had one of my old rat cages left, so i'm using that, also i bought food, a wooden house for them to hide and play in, a food dish, a water bottle, some special pet "stuffing" for them to shred and sleep in, a chew toy, and this special litter that feels kinda like fabric but it's supposed to be non-toxic and help with the smell and stuff.
i also bought johnson's baby lotion for them, because the guy at the pet store said that they need lotion put on them every once in awhile, coz they have sensitive skin and it gets dry and flaky. so how often should i put the lotion on them?
oh, and does it sound like i have all i need to take care of them? how often should i feed them? i fed them last night, and this morning when i woke up, their food dish was empty.

So, a neighbor of mine has 2 male guinea pigs and she needs to get rid of them. Her husband never wanted them in the first place, and her kids lost interest so she agreed to let them go. She said she had a classified ad for 30 days now and no takers. Now her husband is threatening to drop them off in the park, which I couldn't BELIEVE! They are fighting over this. So I stepped in and suggested I take them. My little munchkins (my kids) were excited. They played with the guinea pigs, held them, the guinea pigs were great! Calm, cuddly, very open to being handled, so I thought, let's do it! But the problem is, I have a 2 year old Labrador. I am just wondering if anyone has had experience with a Lab and guinea pigs. I am not the type to leave the animals in a cage. I would have them free mostly, and also let them play in the backyard. But do you think my dog will want to attack? Is there any hope? When I take in animals it is permanent, so I need help deciding what to do, thanks!!!!!
