It has been roaming my house and I havent seen it, and at times i wonder if it is still alive. My friend should have known better than giving me a wooden cage since I dont know about hamsters. Anyways I really liked that hamster so much and Im thinking about getting me another one, well I just wanted to know which kind is the best as pets?k thanks

Keep looking for your hamster. Mine was actually lost over a week. He found a great place to hide and was eating the seeds my birds dropped.

This is how I found mine. I hate to say he got loose twice. The first time I tore the house apart. I found him in the case I kept my microphone in.

The second time he was gone much longer. Over a week. I looked everywhere in everything. I was really upset. Keep in mind your hamster is nocturnal and he will probably find a safe place to nest and sleep during the day. If you look for him he could be anywhere basically. I suggest waiting till night. He will be up looking for food, chewing or making noise. Have the house quiet and just sit and listen. I would start in the room he escaped from. Also keep all the room doors in your house closed so you can rule out each room searched. You might even discover evidence of him being there like chewed up cloth or paper. Anyway don't give up. And when you find him get a safe cage. Mine escaped from on of those plastic ones with the tunnels. She is now in a wire cage. Good Luck! Evita

Hamsters were originally wild critters and even domesticated ones have a strong survival instinct. Problem is if your hamster's still locked somewhere in the house it won't be able to find adequate forage. If it made it outdoors your hamster will probably survive until a predator eventually find it.

I had some mice as a kid, a couple escaped and it wasn't until years later when we moved did we find their dried out little bodies. We were surprised that there was no real odor from it.

You want a fun pet that not only is easy to care for but you can actually interact with, get a rat.

Depending on how long it has been gone, it can still be alive.
If it hasnt been long, get a safe cage and place it on the floor, place lots of food in it and the hamster will usually come back to the place where it last knew home in the house.
If that doesnt work, and it hasnt been too long, place a bucket on the ground with food inside of it, then place a bunch of books leading up to the bucket like steps, when the hamster tries to get the food it will be stuck in the bucket.

As for pet wise, it all depends on what you want, syrian hamsters have to be housed alone while dwarf hamsters can be housed together. Its all about personal preferance and the type of hamster you want

Syrians are the best for pets, the live alone and enjoy people. Get a crittertrail cage at petsmart or petco, they sell the hamsters too. Just be sure to put a latch on the door so it don't escape. Sometimes they show up after they escape in the weirdest places. they cannot survive outside, predators.

First of all, find the hamster. If you have no clue where he could be by now, look for signs of where he might be and go from there. You also could find a live rodent trap (PETA.org sells them for $10 or so) and set it up somewhere in the house with tasty treats inside. Just be sure to check it often so he does not starve to death in there once he is caught. If you don't want to have to buy a trap, leave a box out with a peanut or cheerio inside and wait to see if he comes to investigate, and then pick up the box. If you can't watch the box but notice the peanut is missing, at least you know the little guy is alive and well-fed. Don't even think about getting a new hamster until you find the old one. Hamsters are RODENTS, which means that they have to keep chewing to wear down their continuously growing teeth. Aside from the cleanliness problem of leaving little "presents" for you all over your house, this little guy could be chewing up your furniture, computer cords, clothes, etc. I don't know how long he has been missing, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's still in your house. Check the pantry.

If you don't know about hamsters, LEARN! Do not go out and buy a new hamster without doing a lot of research on your own. Do not rely on someone on the internet to tell you which kind they like best, or to tell you what to do when something doesn't go as planned. Go to hamster websites and check out hamster books from the library. Learn about the different breeds, what their personalities are, whether they like to be kept with a friend or not, whether they are nocturnal or not, what they eat, what sort of bedding to give them, how long they live, and so forth. Do you have the money for a new cage (escape-proof, this time!)? Can you afford to buy new food and bedding for the animal often? Can you afford to take the animal to the vet if it becomes ill? What will you do if you need to go on vacation? What will you do if you have to move to a place where they do not allow pets? You need to ask yourself all of these questions before committing to take care of another life.

Good luck with your search. I hope you find your hamster!

It actually does have a good chance of living if it is still in your house. If he made it to the outside world, he could have been eaten. This may sound silly when refering to rodents, but your hamster is a domestic animal, and is not equiped for the wild. If he is alive and is in the house, you will find him, because he will not be afraid of you like a wild mouse or rodent would be, so he wouldn't scurry away and hide as much as a wild rodent.

Sooner or later he will die if he is not found. Well, you can not blame this on your friend, you needed to be more responsible. I suggest that you DON'T buy another seeing you can not take care of him/her properly. If you have some extra help with him i suggest a panda bear hamster because they are big. Or I suggest a long haired hamster because they are median sized and ADORE to be held. Just please, take care of this one will ya??
