Sounds like wet tail, possibly. You should take him to the vet (yes, the vet!!!!) for an examination, but you can take him to the Petco store you got him from and ask them (they won't know much about it because they are not TRAINED MEDICAL PERSONNEL like a VET).

This is from Wikipedia: Wet tail
The most serious intestinal disease of small rodents is "wet tail", or Proliferative Ileitis, which is most common among weaning gerbils (3-6 weeks). Symptoms include lethargy, increased irritability, hunched posture, fluid or bloody diarrhea, a wet, soiled anal area and tail, and, sometimes, rectal prolapse. A veterinarian is needed to immediately examine and evaluate the situation and will usually treat the problem with fluid replacement, oral antidiarrheal medication, and antibiotics, although treatment is often unrewarding, and death may occur as soon as 48 hours after the onset of initial signs.

We have lost 3 hamsters because of wet tail. There is something that can be added to water, but it has never done any good. That is why you should really take your poor, SUFFERING gerbil TO THE VET!!!

I've had many excellent pets from pet outlets. First of all, gerbils is just not on bedding. Some (as a minimum 50%) of gerbils are allergic to sawdust. Something like carefresh is a much better substitute. And they will have to be in a position to bury/make tunnels in it. All small animals are fragile, it might be any number of matters. Some simply do not do good once they get dwelling. As for the person who mentioned they need to be sorted 24/7, that's now not true. Should you never give them any peace, they're going to get stressed, to be able to kill them. Our 2 gerbils were young adults after we received them, neither have been very good cared for; simply supply time and excellent nutrition they got back to well being. We failed to display them 24/7 - flawlessly healthy ones should not want that. I am hoping you get some new pets, higher success next time.
