It depends what you want- females retain their playful curious nature throughout their lives- males tend to get lazier around six months of age-
Females are prone to tumors which may in the long run require veterinary intervention/surgery-
Males have musky odor that is not offensive.
Males tend to mark you and your furnishings with small amounts of urine, which may deter you from purchasing a male-although most rat owners realize a little bit of pee won't hurt them.
Males are larger, and easier to hold on too.-
Please consider getting two rats- as rats are always happiest with a ratty friend. I know you intend to spend a lot of time playing with your rat, but you cannot compensate for the companionship of another rat- If you spend four hours a day playing with your rat, that means it's alone for twenty hours- a second rat costs no more to feed and house than a single rat-
Both sexes will be eaqually loving!
Good luck-hope this helps.

Get a male. I have had both and males are usually always the more lazy of the two. Females tend be more curious and constantly moving. My male would sit in the same spot on my shoulder for the longest time. Age comes into play also. When they get older, they lounge more.. dont we all.

Definitely get males if you want to be able to lounge with with them mainly, females if you want to play with the rats mainly. Either way, get 2! Even if you spend 6 hours a day w/ your rat, you can't groom it and sleep with it like another rat would. Both rats will bond to you if you spend about 30-60 minutes w/ each one. So please get 2 rats!!!! :)

I have only had females so i can't argue against getting a male but the rat should be pretty good either way if you treat it right

Well I just got a male rat myself becasue as they get older they are more laid back. Females are more jumpy and "crazy". Really though it depends on the rat itself.

Male rats are more friendly and fun. Female rats don't like to be played with because I guess they dont like fun?
