I have a 10 gallon aquarium with 2 guppies and a swordtail in. One of the guppies has Ich. At least I think it is ich (white spots like salt crystals all over the body). I was told at the store to put some aquarium salt in the tank to kill the ich. It doesn't seem to be working

This is for my sister's fish, mine's getting better. It looks like it is on its death bed. Getting paler by the day. Symptoms: hasn't eaten for 1.5 weeks, stays at the bottom, occassionally comes up for air, lethargic, a couple days ago the fish had a clear string of poo hanging from its poo area. She has been giving it bettafix(has Melaleuca) for a week.

I recently tested my water and the only thing that was a little bit off was how soft my water is (the reading was 120). I'd like to raise it a bit higher because i have a school of black phantom tetras that like harder water. Is there anything around the house i can use to raise the hardness? ive heard of people putting baking soda in the water, does this work?

He appears totally healthy. However, whenever I feed him (3 pellets), he suddenly becomes bouyant, like a bobber. This lasts about 12 hours or so. I've had him for 4 months, and this just started a week ago...do you know what is going on?

I have two questions regarding the care of bettas.

Background: I've succesfully kept a few bettas in filter tanks (Eclipse System Three -- they seem to love it!) But I have one or two bettas in a gallon jar at any time. These bettas give me the most problems. I do a complete water change every week and partial water changes (20%-25%) half way through the week.

My problems:
(1) Somehow the bettas in the jars seem to develop brownish-red coloring on the head and around the front area of the gills. I suspected ammonia/nitrite poisoning, but I always get 0 readings from my test kits. What gives? They also appear healthy, active, and remain eager feeders.

(2) One of my bettas in the jar refused everything but Hikari Bio-Pure freeze-dried bloodworms. But after a few days, he developed a HUGE belly and then died two days thereafter. I see nothing else wrong with him when I examined his corpse -- did he die of constipation? Is it bad to feed freeze-dried worms only?

I know bettas can't be with other bettas because they fight till the death..whatever. But can't they be with other fish? I seem to remember when I was a kid having all kinds of fish and the betta didn't hurt the rest of them....
help...

I was thinking of adding a pleco to my tank (one of the smaller ones that stays about 5 inches) and I was wondering if you think I have enough room. I have a 55 gallon tank, everything is in check....good filter, heater, i check the temperature and ph, & amonia, nitrate, nitrite, hardiness levels frequently. What I have in there now is: 5 lemon tetras, 2 blue rams, 1 glass fish, 1 sunburst, 1 elephant nose, 1 angel fish. I think I should be okay but I was wondering what you guys thought.

my tank is over a year old now and is cycled. I have about 12 african cichlids. the brown algae is out of control. im so tired of scraping it just to have it come back in a week and keep all levels low. i do weekly water changes. apparently im not supposed to have an algae eater because the cichlids are supposed to eat it but they wont. maybe because its brown and not green. so what do i do? go get an algae eater (they are not supposed to be very compatable with cichlids).

Ok, I have done all the research I can on spawning...I have been successful...I have (at least) 30 babies...the only thing all the research did not cover was rocks in the tank...I have them...my swordtail babies never had a problem, but these babies are SO SMALL! Should I carefully remove the rocks, or will the babies be ok?

i have live plants, bog wood,3 plattys, 3 blood hart tetra, 2 weather loaches ive had 4 years and recenty 2 small marble angel fish. my tank has bin cycleing for bout 2 wks and the fish r doing fine apart from a bit of green water ive bin testin my water daly for PH, KH,GH, N02, N04, NH3 and NH4 and hav steady results from all
PH - 7.6
KH - 3
GH - 16
N02 - 1
N03 - 50
ammonia NH3/NH4 - 0.25
and a temp of 25c / 77f

these readings havent changed for a while and are holding stead at the moment. is everything fine or is something wrong as my reading are not changing much. the fish seem fine and i already have a pregnant platty.

i could not do a fishless cycle as i already had some fish to start with which came with the tank and obviously needed to get them in water. the under gravel filter and gravel are new but the 2nd filter on the side of the tank was reuse from a cold water setup just rinsed.
