Water type animals don't just adapt like land animals because their environment has a different pH level and they are a lot more sensitive to the pH in the water because it is constantly around them and through them. Changing it's water from saltwater to freshwater is very harmful in the way that if your pH level differs by too much it is very harmful to you. DO NOT try to switch it's water.
In fact not only do you need to keep them in salt water but in salt water with certain ratios of many things. You can test for these but here are some of the ones you need to check most frequently that need to be balanced or you will lose your seahorses: pH levels, salinity, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia
those all need to be done either DAILY or WEEKLY but there are others. Before you decide to get a seahorse carefully decide if this is a responsibility you can handle and take a look at the list of things to test below:

It's a tough call. The chances are that seahorses would be severely outcompeted for food resources. Try something benthic, that will not compete as much, like a shrimp goby. You could even pair him with his pistol shrimp, if you'd like. Mixing with other tube-mouths, assuming you can provide the food in sufficient quantities, can also work. Adding in a small species of pipefish would work, as would the urchin clingfish (Diademichthys lineatus). To be honest, though, if your tank is large enough, and your able to feed enough without compromising water quality, a small fish like some Talbot's damsels, cherub angel, or a royal gramma would probably be just fine. I'd suggest sticking with TINY things, though...2" and under, preferably. Keep in mind these suggestions are for some of the moderate sized seahorses. I'm just assuming you don't mean the dwarves.

Seahorses are salt water only. They are also considered to be difficult to keep as they are hard to train to eat frozen food and do not compete well with other fish in the tank as they cannot swim to the food fast enough.

NO! Seahorses are extremely fragile- They are hard to keep in saltwater as it is...let alone trying to adjust them to freshwater

it has to be in saltwater. when u ready the tank with salt water and the salt ratio abt 24, then just add fresh water (the ratio will not drop) everyday..
please look for more information before keep seahorses as they are fragile and hard to breed..
here have a link which you can refer.. http://www.seahorses.de/seahorses.htm
i'll suggest you to keep one if you are expert in salt water, yet you will easily lose them..

Theoretically, it is possible. However, it would take generations of sea horses, each living in a slightly less salty enviroment. However, breeding sea horses is nearly impossible, so this idea would be near impossible as well. Before you do get sea horses, remember that they need huge stable cycled marine tanks to themsleves, and that they must be fed live foods. All in all, DONT GET THEM

I have never kept sea horses however, I would assume since their natural habitat is salt water you can not use fresh water or wean them off of it.

yes they can be weaned off salt in exactly the same way that you can be weaned off air - and with the same result.

I think, it's best if you could check out with the aquarium stores assistant. I think it's best to leave them alone in their exotic habitats. Else, the water worlds~ (I believe cannot)
