where i lived before they always gave a pre-ansethetic first , then would tube the patients and use a gas anesthesia, but this one just uses something to knock them out with and some one told me that her dog came home very weird and was very scared to go back. is this right, don't all vets use gas for surgeries?

you admire, respect and adore, BUT would never fit into your lifestyle, and tell us why.

For me, it would be a St. Bernard *or any of the "drooling breeds"*. i love this breed! they are wonderful critters..but i couldn't handle the drool. lol, no offense and I'm sure that might be a lame excuse for some, but for me it's an allergy issue.
i am allergic to dogs and i have asthma. i have 4 of them and take medication to keep my allergies in check; much to my doctor's disapproval (but..then he can just shut up! i wont get rid of my dogs).
BUT if my dogs lick me..i break out in a rash..so the thought of a sweet lovable drool bucket like the St. Bernard is a bit scary! hee hee.

I have a 5 mo old boxer puppy. We currently have him on a large breed puppy formula food (not stating which brand bc that is not the discussion topic).

I read somewhere not to feed large breed puppies puppy food due to the high fat content.

Is this true? Arent they supposed to have more fat and protein as babies?

When should I convert him over?

I was wondering do you think it is just as good to get a dog from the classifieds in the newspaper or the ASPCA or is it better to get a puppy from a breeder?

We are moving soon and our new apartment will not accept all of our dogs due to breed restrictions, so,unfortunately, that puts me in the position of trying to find good, clean, safe, loving homes for dogs I love and consider almost family members.Having never done this before,I want to make sure I am doing everything I can to ensure they will be in a good home. Would you simply take them to a shelter and trust professionals to find them homes, even though they may be put to sleep(horrible thought) if no home is found or put an ad in somewhere and have people come in to adopt them?If the latter, what questions do you ask and what do you look for to best ensure they are going to a good home? Any input would be appreciated!

I sent a deposit to a breeder for a puppy of a litter that is due mid november. They returned my call when I first contacted them and were available for two other calls I made after the initial contact. They told me that they would send a puppy contract once they received my deposit. I left a message about a week in a half after sending the deposit, after I saw that the check had cleared -just to touch base and to see when I could expect the contract. I then tried again about four days later. They have not returned my calls. It has been three weeks. They appear to be a reputable breeder. Should I be concerned? -and is this normal for a breeder? They are listed on the national club website for the breed, they have an up to date website, and when I spoke with another breeder they knew who I was talking about and didn't say anything bad about them. I'm not worried about the deposit money, I just really want to know that all of my ducks are in a row to get my puppy! Any advise?

i have another question. when they do those dog shows like i see on tv and get to the final groups and have to judge between toy group, working group, terrier group, herding, etc. how do the judges pick what is supposed to be the winner out of these groups? is it the judges preference of his type of dog? i mean usually when i watch these shows, the little toy poodle wins, lol. how do they judge the toy poodle against a german shephard, etc. to get best in show? thanks.

She is 3 months old and still has accidents in the house. She will pee not long after coming inside sometimes.
We punish her when she goes inside and also offer positive reinforcement when she goes outside...

Stopped at a gas station yesterday I would normally not stop at. Not quite sure why.Guy earlier had apparently slowed his truck down, kicked her out in the MIDDLE of a four land road, and then drove off.I believe if you find it you were chosen.. lucky me.Yes, of course I brought her home. She's bout 3 months old.
She came in with dogs, cats and a toddler(after we left the vet of course) and made her lil self right at home with my other dog's "bo bo's(toys)" and slept on the sofa. She's beautifully tempered..loves EVERYONE.We got x-rays yesterday, shots, blood tests, wormed and some Frontline.Should have seen her lil self prancing around clean and shiny.Made it ALL worth it.
I sit here now in tears I scared her so badly. All I did was start sweeping the floor. When she came in and saw the broom she FREAKED. She screamed bloody murder, she fell down and she shook and peed all over herself. She's still in the corner. The vet said she'll outgrow it. He's not holding the broom! What do I do?

I've grown up my whole life with large breeds and absolutely adore and trust them when they are raised properly. My boyfriend and I are considering buying a puppy and he seems to think that larger breeds are more inclined to bite, even when properly socialized and trained. The breed I am considering is a Vizsla, which is a very gentle breed from what I hear.

How should I convince him otherwise?

this probably sounds stupid, but what does it mean when someone says "breed standard" when talking about the breed. in that i mean any purebred when they say stuff like "the dog is a great specimen of the breed." how do you know what a "great specimen" of a particular breed is? do you judge this by the way the dog looks or does it have to do with championship wins? i don't breed or show, but have always been curious of this. thanks in advance.

He has green boogers in his eyes all the time, which then leak out and harden, glueing his eyes shut and making him miserable. One vet said his tear ducts aren't working and I should put drops in his eyes, which I have now for a couple of months without any improvement.

Anyone have a better answer?

She is an 18 year old Dachshund. I know she'll be gone before too much longer. She's blind and deaf, but we love her. And this morning I noticed she hadn't moved from the spot where she fell asleep last night, So I picked her up and took her out side, and she looked like she was incapable of walking. She tried, but everytime she did so, her hind legs would go out from under her. [kind of like she was squatting.] Even on the carpet.
What's wrong with her? Paralyzed? Nerve Damage? Too much pain??

I was just curious because the lady next door is giving away puppies and I was thinking of getting one male and one female but I was wondering when they got older would they well you know. If so I wasn't going to get two because I don't want a lot of puppies running around.

We got our purebred Schnoodles from a great breeder, or so we thought. We got two from the same litter, a male and female as we were told they'd fight less. But she told us that sister and brothers wouldn't try and mate, as that would be inbreeding. The are about 7 months old now, and the other day they were...well...you know. So is this just playing, or can they have puppies? Also, the girl seems to be on her period, how long will this last?A week or so?Thanks!

I have noticed alot of answers to questions pertaining to mixed breeds have been answered negatively. I am not a breeder nor do I have any interest in becoming one but, I wonder why it is considered by the majority to be bad thing to cross breed dogs, like puggles for example, they are really cute and if people want them why is it considered to a bad thing? I know you can get mixed breeds from shelters but, it may not be the mix one desires. Didn't every breed start as a "mixed breed"?

I am just curious ... :0)

The dog should arrive on Friday. I have a utility room cleaned out that is all his. I am going to buy the food the breeder recommended (Iams, eukasomething I think) in a big bag, food and water dishes, leash and collar, large dog bed, 4-5 toys, shampoo and a box of treats and a grooming brush with soft bristles. The dog is 14 months old. Is there anyhting else I may need? I have never owned a dog this large before.

My question is, does anyone know of any puggles for sale in MN that is relatively a good price that have also had shots, dewormed etc....also does anyone know...is it bad to get a puggle that came from a female pug and a male beagle? Is that still considered a puggle? I know the original cross should be a male pug and female beagle...anyone know anything?

Since my dogs are inside dogs & all short hair, I need some information here regarding a Husky (Cody) I recently took in.
She has always been an outside dog, doesn't want to stay in the house for any length of time, so my question is, "how cold is too cold for her to be out?"
I have her a house set up on the enclosed deck, the house is insulated & has straw in it , but she won't even get in it. Right now she is sleeping on a dog bed on the deck beside the house. Since I have never had a dog live outside our home, I'm having a problem dealing with this.
The home she was abandoned at, she use to sleep under a deck on the cold ground so I know she does have it better here, but I do want to have her come inside if / when it gets too cold.
Any & all help / advice will be greatly appreciated by myself & Cody.

We have a 1 year old colker spanier/terrier mix, she has been a great dog up until now, she has suddenly started chewing everything bathtub stoppers, my jacket zipper, pencils, backpacks, you name it. She has plenty of toys and a cat that she drives CRAZY. Why is she suddenly doing this and how can we stop her. I don't want to kennel her as she spent the first 6 mos of her life in a kennel just large enough for her to stand up and lie down in (her previous owners had her there)

We recently had to shave my Cairn Terrier because of a bad flea infestation. We groomed him at home with lots of love, and he was very well-behaved during the whole thing. Nearly 2 weeks later, he has started to shake when put outside to do his business.

The weather has turned colder around here since we shaved him, but we put a sweater on him and only put him out as long as he needs to be. He is showing aversion to even going out the door, although he is excited to have the sweater put on. As soon as he goes out, he starts to shiver and will not do his business.

Is this a stress issue or is it simply too cold for him? Nothing stressful has happened since the grooming.
