Was it your vet who told you to give her Benadryl? Why is her skin dry? Is it from over-bathing?

If she's being bathed more than once a month, that would be part of the cause of her dry skin. You can try bathing less - it doesn't matter what kind of shampoo you use, it will still dry a dog's skin and coat.

Also, if you add either vegetable oil to her food daily (1 tsp to 1 tbsp depending on her size) or give her a salmon oil capsule daily, it'll make a tremendous difference. Dogs need some extra oil, especially in the dry winter months. If you try that, you'll see a difference within 2 weeks.

If she's itching because of allergies, you'll likely have to switch foods, but if she has really dry skin that would be more likely to be the cause of her itching constantly.

I'm assuming your question is what else can you give her. First off, benedryl is safe to give to dogs, vets recommend it all the time for allergies, as well as car sickness and it does help. But if you want to try something else give the dog a good oatmeal bath with oatmeal shampoo, leave it on for a while, about 10 minutes, it should help to soothe the dry skin. But this is also only temporary and the dog will probably start itching again within a few days.

there are several things to look at about this question. What breed? what do u feed her? How often do you bathe her?

I am a dog groomer and see this all the time. The type of food is very important. A good high quality food is beneficial to dogs that have dry skin. My favorite is NUTRO...it has no fllers and no by products. Dogs that get bathed too often can also have dry skin because u wash away their natural oils. You should not bathe a dog but once every 4-6 weeks. Hopes this helps u.

maybe your dog has a lack of essential oils in nutrition.
The second thing is shampoo it strips the dog of it's natural oils...so no shampoos not even the ones for dry skin. You might want to add brewers yeast to the dog's diet with a premium kibble. Have the vet check for yeast and bacteria. Have them check for autoimmunity problems. Cold water usually reduces itching for about a half an hour. PURE aloe vera gel is helpful, too.

I don't like that answer either. When we have dry skin we use lotion. Do you wash your dog a lot? That can cause dry skin. Oatmeal shampoo and other shampoos can help with dry skin. I'm sure there are other products out there (sprays, lotions, etc) that help with dog dry skin. Many dogs have that problem.

I'd suggest providing more oil in her diet.

A good bath with a hypoallergenic oatmeal dog shampoo will help soothe her skin and relieve her symptoms. (Just be sure to COMPLETELY RINSE or she'll itch even more.) Tomlyn makes a good oatmeal shampoo.

We were giving our dogs Benadryl and it worked really well. We also found out that the one is allergic to chicken. When changed her food and she no longer has skin issues.

benadryl is good for allergies that causes them to get red itchy skin or for bites and stings or in some cases food allergies.i give my husky this for his seasonal allergies and it helps to take the itch away.i also give him predisone from the vet when he is in misery and cannot stop biting and scratching himself.i use medicated oatmeal dog skin conditioner which i rub on his red areas and leave it on, it soothes his itchies.try the benadryl and give him one in the am and another in the evening and see if it helps or try the conditioner. if there is no relief take him in for a check up to find out what is causing this problem.

Take the dog to the vet and he will prescribe the proper dog antihistamine and antibiotic that you will give the dog for 2 weeks. This happens to my dog every year about the same time because she is allergic to grass pollens. We also give my dog fatty acid supplements because the dog food doesn't have enough oil in it.

I don't like that answer, either.

What are you feeding her? Many dogs are allergic or sensitive to corn or other ingredients in their food. Have you considered changing her food?
