Not at all. They all do not use gas. For per-say knocked out, all my dogs that were neutered or spayed were put to sleep & came out fine. Of course they were a little doped up, but once the anestetic wore off they were back to normal.

A lot of vets use a drug to knock the dog out for a simple spay or neuter, especially vets who do a lot of low cost fixing.
It's not a problem in normal spay/neuters as this is pretty simple surgery and over with soon.
If you don't like your vet doing it this way, find another who intubates - but it is usually not necessary and the dog comes out of the surgery just fine. Some dogs do not do well on gas or with intubation, plus it is expensive and takes a lot longer.
I have had many rescue dogs spayed or neutered without gas or intubation and never had a problem with one of them.
I have twice had a problem at my old vet when a small dog and a small cat did not come out of the gas well and developed fluid in the lungs - I really prefer to have a vet who doesn't use this as a matter of routine - it is far more exensive, takes longer, and is harder on the dog or cat.
My vet does give a pain shot good for 24 hours, so the animal does not suffer after he wakes up.

The vet clinic I used to work at would only use gas anesthesia on certain breeds (those sensitive to anesthesia, for example, since the gas leaves their system much faster), or if the surgery was expected to take some time.
For neuters (relatively quick), they would rarely use gas. Just an injected pre-anesthetic sedative, and an anesthesia. For most spays, if they were routine and, again, quick, same thing.
I'm not sure that the "weirdness" in the dog you mention had anything to do with gas vs. injected anesthesia. I'm not sure why one or the other would make a dog scared.

Not all dogs need to be intubated or need gas. We do spays and neuters at our humane society twice a week and we do it only for certain dogs (such as very large dogs which take longer to do and breeds with short noses such as pugs). We have never had a fatality and few complications, none that I am aware from the dog not being intubated.

Most but not all vet use the gas. Alot dont the problem with the drugs is that they are limited on the amount of time that they have so if there are problems they can be crunched. If youb are not comfortable with howe your vet does this just go to another vet

Our old vet did all of his neuters like this. She used to neuter cats at your farm on the tail gate of the truck.
Some of the spays as well.
It is done if the vet can not afford or do not have the gas passing equiptment. It may be a small clinic or one vet shop and he may not be able to afford the equiptment.
I have seen many done this way in the past but I prefer that my dogs be done under gas anestesia and use a vet who has the equiptment.

Many vets use an injection (or series of injections). Many vets have also started using reversible anesthesia (so the animal can be "pulled out" if there's a complication) which, as far as I know, is done by injection.

Some vets don't use gas, they use an injection. But knocking them out with something other than medication is definitely forbidden!

I agree with you, I would want All pre op and peri operative measures taken. At least if the dog is intubated and IV'd, if anything goes wrong during surgery, they can quickly administer meds that could affect their life. I would find another vet.
