you admire, respect and adore, BUT would never fit into your lifestyle, and tell us why.

For me, it would be a St. Bernard *or any of the "drooling breeds"*. i love this breed! they are wonderful critters..but i couldn't handle the drool. lol, no offense and I'm sure that might be a lame excuse for some, but for me it's an allergy issue.
i am allergic to dogs and i have asthma. i have 4 of them and take medication to keep my allergies in check; much to my doctor's disapproval (but..then he can just shut up! i wont get rid of my dogs).
BUT if my dogs lick me..i break out in a rash..so the thought of a sweet lovable drool bucket like the St. Bernard is a bit scary! hee hee.

Border Collies!
I've always loved them and know that they are one of the most intelligent dogs but I'm too old and not in good enough health to give them the life they deserve!
I was lucky enough when younger to own two Collie crosses and one did very well at obedience though I never went further than local level with him!
They need to use all that intelligence as much or even more so than my beloved German Shepherds and they need lots of exercise and mental stimulation that I'm not in a position to provide! I have a young friend we meet up with daily at the beach and her Collie is taken to Obedience, Agility and Fly ball yet still runs rings round my Shepherd! He just never stops running! Guess I'll just carry on worshipping them from afar and leave owning them to fitter younger owners!

This is a great question!

I love the Saint's and Newf's, I think they are lovely dogs, but alas, the drooling thing would be a slight factor for me. I'm sure I could manage if I had to tho :) I am also very fond of the northern breeds, but from experience with that undercoat and grooming, I'm not interested in taking one of those on again any time soon.

I'm also quite hooked on herding these days with my Border Collie, so I would prefer to stick with breeds that are bred to do this.

l have always adored Giant breeds like the Great Dane and Irish Wolfhound. But right now , One of these breeds would not suit my lifestyle. I dont have the room because I live with my family. Plus my mother is extremely intimidated by huge dogs and would never agree to house one. I on the other hand would give anything to adopt at least one of these lovely dogs. One day when Im out on my own I hope to be able to.

I respect all breeds of dogs because each individual dog breed was bred for a certain job and each is intelligent. Unfortunatly no breed will fit into my current lifestyle because I'm in the Military and I move far to often and do not have enough stability to stay at home which is why My Boxer/lab and Australian shepard/Blue heeler mix dogs are at home with my wife .

Border Collie

From what I've seen, these breeds need a serious job, not even just serious exercise. I think they're great, beautiful dogs who are amazing at herding sheep. But I'd certainly never own one.

Same could be said for the Jack Russell Terriers. I certainly admire the working terriers, but JRTs have a little bit too much instinct and too much energy for me.

And for either breed, I wouldn't want a "dumbed down" version that was bred for the pet market. That would be demeaning a hard-working, beautiful breed and I'd find that pathetic.

ADD: Terrier: Thanks for the videos! I love it. Everyone watch Terrier's videos.

I love German Shorthaired Pointer but I have read that these dogs need to have lots more exercise than I can provide. I just know that this dog would drive me nuts.

I also really like Newfs but the drool would make me crazy and I just do not think I can get use to carrying aroung a drool rag.

hehe, Saints are awesome!! A whole lot of drool, but a whole lot of dog to love! They give the best hugs!!! Anytime you need a Saint fix let me know, I can send you some pictures :)

Anyways, the breed I LOVE, but know I could not own would be -hands down- a Tibetan Mastiff. They are a wonderful breed, but a very challenging breed. They were bred to think independently (without any direction from us humans!) and were bred to be on guard at all times (sheep mostly).

In my experience, they can be quite difficult to train and I am going to be honest in saying I know I do not have the time these furkids need. Tibetan Mastiffs tend to bark a lot (they like to give warning barks) and that would not be fair to my neighbors.

Also, they are and are EXTREMELY smart and are wonderful escape artists. My friends who are involved in TM rescue admit that they have a HARD time keeping these gentle giants occupied and keeping them from running away. You should see the creativity!

Have a great day! Excellent question!!

I would LOVE to have a long haired dog bc they are sooo pretty! Like a collie or even a smaller breed like a shi-tzu. They definitely wouldn't fit into my lifestyle just because of all of the grooming they need. I just don't have time to clean all of that hair up inside and don't want to have to worry about their fur becoming matted. It just wouldn't be fair to the dog, or my furniture, if I had one until I am a little more settled in my career and stop working so much! lol

Probably a Newf. I'm a clean freak. I would be forever following the dog around with a drool rag. When I lived in a different state I used to babysit my friend's two Newfies. I tied towels around their necks to act as drool bibs. This helped keep their chests clean, but I was constantly wiping their legs clean. NOT to mention the drool spots on the floor (that even show after the drool has dried,) the drool spots on the walls, the glass doors and just about everywhere. These dogs would stay with me for about a week at a time. I was in love with them! My dogs loved them too, but they really hated drinking after them. When a newf drinks.. it leaves drool floating on top of the water... It's like slime. I don't blame them for not wanting to drink it. Not to mention how long it takes to groom a Newfie. You need about 47 days just to get them dry... and that's with using a professional grooming dryer. lol
Amazing dogs, but I would have to hire someone to follow the dog around constantly...
