She is an 18 year old Dachshund. I know she'll be gone before too much longer. She's blind and deaf, but we love her. And this morning I noticed she hadn't moved from the spot where she fell asleep last night, So I picked her up and took her out side, and she looked like she was incapable of walking. She tried, but everytime she did so, her hind legs would go out from under her. [kind of like she was squatting.] Even on the carpet.
What's wrong with her? Paralyzed? Nerve Damage? Too much pain??

I think it might be a stroke. I want to get her to the vet, but I'm home alone, and my dad won't be home until 9. God, one more year, and I could drive her to the vet. Last year in September, she got really sick, and just plain fell over, couldn't move, and lost control of her bowels. We took her to the vet, thinking we would have to put her down, and by the time we got to Winchester, she was perfectly fine, and the doctor couldn't find anything wrong with her. Hang on, I'm going to se if she has moved.... Well good news and bad news. She not where I left her [by her food bowl and water bowl.] She's laying on my dad's shirt about 8 feet away. But she's still got her feet out from under her. =[.

It'll be sad if we have to let her go, but it'll be a relief not having to clean up dog pee everyday.

Thank you. yeah. she is extremely lucky.

She's been hit by a car, fell down a flight of stairs, walked right off the deck and held on with her paws [there was at least a 10 foot drop], had liver failure, Lyme disease....The list goes on. ahaha. We all joke that she will out live all of us.

Make her comfortable until your dad gets home and you can take her to the vet. At her age I would say she probably is in pain and will need medical attention as soon as you can get it. Just keep her close to you and show her all the love you can. This may be the only time you have left with her.

I have 7 dachshunds and they are great dogs but are prone to back problems, That your gilr made it to 18 without any is a miracle.
Give her a hug from me. I am sure she is a great dog.

Definitely take her to the vet. Dachshunds are particularly susceptible to vertebral disk rupture. This can cause hind limb paralysis. Also, she is 18 so there could be some sort of degenerative disease going on here. Unfortunately if it is a disk rupture at 18 you may have to consider euthanasia. Sounds like she needs radiographs. If the vet can't figure it out with minimal diagnostics, they may try steroids to relieveswelling/inflammation. That will only last so long, but may give you time to say goodbye if necessary. Sorry to hear she's not doing well. Give us an update when you know something.

Take her to the vet ASAP. Although at this age, you may need to make the decision all pet owners dread.

If the vet medicates her, is her quality of life going to be worth it? Or will she still be in pain, uncomfortable, and unhappy for the time you add with treatment?

It's hard not to be selfish and try to keep her with you a little longer. But you have to put her first in this. Talk to your vet about all the options.
So sad...

I had a dog that was the same way, she was 14 years old and one morning we woke up and were telling her to go potty outside {she usually would run straight to the door} but she just looked at us like we were stupid, so we went over there and picked her up and took her outside and she couldnt move. We took her to the vet immeadiately and they said that she had a severe stroke. So you might take her and see if that could be it. Good luck.

I'm so sorry to hear about your pup... Sounds like she might have had a stroke. My 3 yr old lab had one in his sleep and was unable to walk when he woke up. After afew hours he was fine but then it progressed and eventually we had to put him down. I would definatly get it checked w/ the Vet.

I am so sorry. You should take her to the vet and let him evaluate her. It may be time to have a talk with him about putting her to sleep.

I recently lost my 17 y.o. cat, and she went through the same things, where one of the last things that happened was that she had no strength or control of her back legs.
Sorry to hear that, but I'm sure she's had a great life with you!

unfortunately it is probably an arthritic condition or the hip joint is damaged, due to old age.
when this happened to my very old (15 y.o.) collie, i took him to the vet and as hard as it was for me, i let him be put painlessly to sleep.
your dog can only be helped by you. you love your dog, i can tell, but it is probably time for you to say goodbye. take the dog to the vet.
