Genotype is the genetics of the dog... what parts of its pedigree is it likely to pass on.. (sometimes a breeding is done purely on pedigree....for example: a friend has a decent b*tch from a fantastic pedigree, she was 3rd pick of the litter of 4, her breedings have been done primarily based on the pedigree of the girl as opposed to her structure - ie breeding her to related dogs with better structure KNOWING that her PEDIGREE shows better structure than she herself does).

Phenotype is how the dog looks... its a MUCH riskier type of breeding plan because how a dog looks does not tell you much about what characteristics he will pass on... He may be a pretty dog .. and his mother may be gawd-awful homely (I know a dog like this!)

The best breedings are ones that take both phenotype and genotype into consideration.

Phenotype is what you can see in the dog - genotype is the genes that determine this. Every mammal get one of each gene from the mother and one from the father (well there are exceptions but only in a very few cases).
Genes work in sortta a game of war to determine phenotype you can't see everything that there - just the "high card".
For example my one dog Evie is black (phenotype) but there are two genes that determine her color. One determines if the dog will be black or red - she got a black gene from her mother and a red one from her father Black is a higher card than red so the black color shows but Evie could have a red pup because she could pass on the hidden red gene. IF the pup got the red gene from Eve but a black from the father the red could "hide" yet another generation only to show up with a grandpup. THis is why one looks at the pedigree of a dog - to see what may show up after "skipping" a generation or two.
