Cats - September 2006

My wife is a cat lover, but with four cats, they sometimes try to be territorial by spraying or simply urinating on everything from a couch, to a door frame to a window or counter. We clean with vinegar and water, followed by various soaps and sprays that contain citrus, This lasts for a bit, but the cats always return to the scene of the crime - sooner or later. How or what can be used to STOP them from repeat offences??

And he doesnt like when people hold him for a long time and when he wants to be let down he'll attack you! i got used to it though so it doesnt hurt any more? Does he have like Separation Anxiety or something?? And at night when i am about to go to sleep he goes poop in the cat box so i cat sleep till the smell is gone. and then later in the night when i am asleep he goes crazy and runs around and attacks my feet so i let him out of my room, but whats wrong with him?? My partner and I had 2 cats & 2 dogs. The cats we had were from the same mother (2 different litters), the 1st, a female, the 2nd a male, when we got the male, we think he thought the female was his mother, he liked her, but she didn't like him. She recently died. He obviously misses her. My ? is should we get another kitten (or cat) to replace her for him? How would he react to a new kitten, (or even a full grown cat) in the house. He is fixed, so I'm thinking it might be OK. The fact that we have two dogs makes me think he may be feeling outnumbered, although he is pretty brave with them most the time. He was always very protective of our female cat. He always stood up to the dogs(I should add both cats were declawed) if he felt they were threatening her, even though they thought they were just playing. So what do you think, should we try replacing her?

When I pet my cat he gets really pissed and growls. We just got a new kitten about 2 months ago and he seems to be irritated by her. They play and sleep together, but sometimes he just gets really mad at her. Lately though, he is secluding himself and he is growling at everything. I can't even touch him without having him look pissed or growl at me. He has always been a little touchy, but this is getting bad. Is there anything I can give to him like a homeopathic remedy or is there anything that I can do for him to make him know he is loved and doesn't need to be mad?

I have one kitten, she is 5 months old, and from the time we got her at 6 weeks, she has been litter trained. she has been peeing and pooping in her box, but recently she will also pee right next to the box, and when i was doing the laundry the other day, she is now peeing on dirty clothes. We have no other cats, and this is something she just started, but doesn't do it all the time. Any ideas on how to get her to stop?

Our cats have fleas and we've tried everything. Are there any real alternatives to Advantage? We have 5 adult kitties and 4 kittens, so advantage is cost-prohibitive. I'm allergic to flea bombs, but I haven't reacted badly to flea powder, so I could sprinkle that liberally on the floor, if need be. Suggestions, anyone?

Probably from the food he is eating. Just wondering if I should change his diet at all. Feeding him canned Friskies and 9 lives and leaving out hard food. Also giving him pounces.

My cat Friskey recently became very sick all of a sudden. I took her to the multiple clinics and finally ended up at the U of I small animal clinic where they did an ultrasound. Basically, in a nutshell, all her blood work and other tests came back fairly normal with the exception being a very elevated wbc count (42,000). But she does not have an elevated temperature. The only clinical signs she is showing is lethargy and vomiting, but that has subsided in the past day. The ultrasound reveled a small nodule on her liver, but her liver enzymes are normal. The next best step (or so they say) is a biopsy of the liver and small intestine. I don't know what to do, if I should go ahead with the surgery or what. Oh and my cat is 16 by the way. And this was really sudden, before this all she had was slight renal failure and borderline hyperthyroidism. Otherwise she was very healthy and active...I am very distraught over this.

He would normally just pee on laundry or soft places but recently he also pooped in these places. His litter box is clean and he uses it on occasion. He is about a year and a half old and was born in my closet. I personally litter trained him and had no problem with this when he was little. I need him to stop because I don't want to put him outside. My boyfriend thinks that putting his nose in it will teach him a lesson but I don't think that cats learn that way. I love him to death but I need this to stop.

Riley, our precocious and opinionated orange tabby, was always fascinated by watching water trickle down the bathtub drain. He used to beg for us to turn on the water - so he could watch it. Soon after he began squatting over the bathtub drain and peeing in it! He will also pee in the sink drain (same bathroom). This takes place in the bathroom where his litter box is located. Yes, we scoop the boxes and keep them clean. However, Riley also pees in the drain of a powder room where he eats his meals (he inhales his food and then tries to eat his brother's food, so he must be confined!).

Help???

Last night I lost a little kitten(my lil Boo) it took it's last breath and I had to bury it , I gave it CPR for an hour trying to call the VETS office but there was no one there and the only places that were open were the EMERGENCY hospitals that can take care of your animal, but they want at least 500 up front don't you think there should be places that can take your pet and let you have payments very low, I mean we have Ambulances for us and people pay for that but a helpless little kitty lost it's life last night because no one was willing to help, My fiancee asked a question last night on here and some people were very MEAN! about the situation! I know there will be those %$#^@^# kind of answers probably with this one too! Because it seems that some people in this world have lousy hearts in certain situations, What can I do to help our pets get the medical attention they deserve at the time they need it?

My kitty is acting tired and is sleeping a lot. He is hardly eating or using the restroom. I just checked inside his mouth and his gums are white. He has been tested for Feline AIDS and leukemia. The tests were negative. Can you please give me some suggestions as to what is wrong and to make him more comfortable. I will be taking him to the Vet tomorrow. Thank you in advance.

My cat was decapitated in our lawn tractor. I constructed a new head out of some cardboard, elmers glue and black yarn. It's just not the same. He doesn't even meow...he just sort of lays there. And he smells some too. How do I let go of ol' my old friend.

I had to change his name to Stiffy--so as not to freak out the kids.

I just witnessed kitty gnawing at her front paw thumb nail. It sounded like she was ripping a piece of flesh off. I think I found a piece of dead nail skin on her fur right after. Is this normal?

We moved into a new house, she was doing it at the old house, and thought a fresh start would help. There is one other cat in the house, and 3 Litter Maid litter boxes spaced out, and emptied 2x a week.

She's been under a bookshelf for four days and only comes out at night, won't let me touch her. I've tried toys, treats, catnip, ignoring her, nothing works!
