Are they really part of the coat or are they really eyelashes?

YES, they do ! In fact, the is a birth defect in cats where the eyelashes are inverted - turned toward the eyeball - and the constant abrasion and irritation can result in blindness if not treated. Some breeds are more prone to this defect.

I don't think they have eyelashes, but they do have a third eye lid on the inside that protects their eyes, somewhat like eyelashes would.
