I have one kitten, she is 5 months old, and from the time we got her at 6 weeks, she has been litter trained. she has been peeing and pooping in her box, but recently she will also pee right next to the box, and when i was doing the laundry the other day, she is now peeing on dirty clothes. We have no other cats, and this is something she just started, but doesn't do it all the time. Any ideas on how to get her to stop?

Hi Sue Lynn...I hope I can provide some helpful suggestions to get your little Girl to improve her potty habits. Because the Yahoo Answers can limit the ability the learn as well as share all the necessary details to determine the problematic causes and to provide solutions I will try to assume any possibilities to consider likely reasons as well as some helpful retraining ideas.
First... is your kitty spayed? Cats will begin sexual maturity at 5/6 months and inappropriate soiling is one of symptoms.
My second concern would be to have a vet check for UTI (bladder infection). Consider having a urinalysis to be sure.
Next,it is best to isolate her into a small room with her litter box (food and water as well) until she consistently uses the box. Please don't fret by keeping her in this small room awhile longer (such as a bathroom). As long as you provide her food, water, fun toys and attention she will not become bored or neglected. The reason it's best to confine young kittens to a smaller area is that some kittens adopted at 6 weeks may need a little longer box training time since they didn't gain enough good potty habits at 6 weeks just yet.
While she is confined to the small room it's imperative to remove the urine odour stains with a urine neutralizer product such as Nature's Miracle (PetSmart or Petco). If any hint of the odour remains cats will continue to mark this area to cover it up repeatedly. Ideally these areas will need to be soaked deeply and thoroughly in order to remove all of the urine scent as animals can smell even the slightest lingering odours which humans cannot detect. This product is considered to be environmentally friendly and effective if used as instructed.
As a feline trainer I have found that any time a cat has an accident it is best to not scold or punish a cat in any manner. The reason is that they will associate that whenever they need to go potty they will be punished for the act that nature intended rather than understanding it is WHERE they are going potty that is bad. Cats are unable to separate these two ideas so it's best to quietly clean up the accident and reward the kitty with favourite food treats whenever you catch her using her litter box. This way she learns that the box is a fun place because she’ll be rewarded with yummy treats. This method can also be applied to train cats to scratch appropriate places versus bad places...whenever they scratch somewhere you do not want touched pick them up quietly and place them to the scratch post/toy and reward with food treats. It's a guaranteed method if done repeatedly while they are young.
As a very final resort some cats can benefit with antidepressants prescribed by your vet. However, at her young age I would suspect she needs more litter retraining.
Aside from the above suggestions there are also products such as Feliaway to help calm stressed felines, which sometimes may or may not work. Diet can also play a role, however at her age I don't believe this is likely just yet. These additional ideas however don't control the inappropriate soiling effectively as well as isolation into a small space and having a UTI exam. They are only supplemental in nature.
It's wonderful that you are trying to learn how to best resolve the inappropriate soiling early. I hope you will take into consideration some of the above suggestions.

With no vet assess (urinalysis done proper there at the place of business) you do not know if she's obtained an contamination or not. Cats with a UTI are in soreness when they pee so the last situation they do it's within the litter field, they companion the field with causing the affliction. They instead look for smooth things to pee on. Rule the UTI out first. Antibiotics or acidifiers are how you can clear the challenge up, now not just hoping the conduct will discontinue. Stress phases will trigger a UTI, so she's nonetheless a candidate for having the contamination. Having the kids put their garb in a included bog down can help loads. As will closing doors to rooms that cat favors for making use of. Stress is tough on cats, on the whole conduct is the one means they need to indicate to the men and women they live with that they do not believe adequate about whatever or are hurting. Working with the vet to see what the cause is is the first step. Whether it is one hundred% habits induced with the aid of stress, and also you can't have the ability to help the cat deal, I've recognized some individuals who use an historic rag shirt caught in a low sided field with plastic beneath and have that as a decoy location for the cat to use.

Last year my beautiful Manx cat Theodore went out for the evening and never came back. I love cats and the house didn't feel the same without one, so I picked up Lola from a rescue centre. She was very frightened and would pee all over the house. I found Cat Spraying No More on the internet and the techniques worked almost immediately. I haven't had a problem with Lola since. Amazing!
Can't stop your cat peeing in the house? Then worry no more...

I had a cat that did the same thing, The vet said, that they will do that if they think the litter box is dirty. So I cleaned it everyday, bought the scoopable litter and scooped it out a couple of times a day, add alittle baking soda to the litter, this helps get rid of any urine smell. The cat did stop peeing everywhere.

umm- well some cats prefer that there box is very clean. If you are able to catch her in the act- keep placing here in the box. I dint believe in hitting animals- but a scold and a light tap??.....
Have you moved the litter box?? Either way- try a different location.
Good luck

my neighbour always taught her kittens like that: she was looking at it and when she saw that the kitten is about to pee on the carpet or the floor, she put it fast into his box. She did that 3-4 times and the kitten got used to peeing in his box. My friends even taught their kitten to pee into the toilet.

My vet suggested trying different litters. Some cats also have allergies to litter..... try different brand, try ripping up newspapers. If all else fails the vet may suggest anti anxiety meds for the cat. If this a new behaviorthen its probably a reaction to some sort of change in the household.

Well if there's certain spots she pees on the floor, spray white vinegar on the areas you don't want her to pee on and she won't get near those places.
Don't leave your dirty clothing anywhere near the reaching area of the cat.

You might need to keep kitty's box cleaner. If her claws are removed, scratching in litter can be painful and she will avoid it by going in softer places.
