My partner and I had 2 cats & 2 dogs. The cats we had were from the same mother (2 different litters), the 1st, a female, the 2nd a male, when we got the male, we think he thought the female was his mother, he liked her, but she didn't like him. She recently died. He obviously misses her. My ? is should we get another kitten (or cat) to replace her for him? How would he react to a new kitten, (or even a full grown cat) in the house. He is fixed, so I'm thinking it might be OK. The fact that we have two dogs makes me think he may be feeling outnumbered, although he is pretty brave with them most the time. He was always very protective of our female cat. He always stood up to the dogs(I should add both cats were declawed) if he felt they were threatening her, even though they thought they were just playing. So what do you think, should we try replacing her?

A kitten is a bad idea. Look for an already declawed cat who is ok with dogs and within five years of age of your cat.

NEVER allow a dog to chase or otherwise "play" with a cat. It's bad manners, even when the cat survives. They are different species and do NOT play with the same rulebook. If you cannot train your dogs to leave the cats alone, then get some dog gates to give the cats safe zones, especially around their food and litter areas. Your cat should NEVER have had to defend the other cat from your dogs.

This answer comes from a lady friend of mine.
You didn't say how old your male cat is but I'm assuming he is less than a year old if he still seems to want a mother figure. This usually changes after they go through puberty (sometime between 9 and 12 months of age). Since he is neutered the normal break towards feeling Independent is altered. If he was neutered before puberty he may stay kitten-like and need companionship more than other males. In my opinion all cats are happier with a compatible companion as they tend to entertain each other, sleep together, and just seem to draw a sense of security from each other's presence. I recommend another female (spayed or not) because it is in a female's nature to tolerate the sometimes constant "annoyances" of her babies when she has them, unless pregnant she also has more patience with the approach, etc of strangers with whom she has to learn to share her space, food, and family.
**ADDED**
I noticed several answers recomending waiting to see how your cat adjusts. I disagree as this time alone will probably cause your cat to become territorial thus causing future problems with the new cat/ kitten.

As a person with dogs and cats in the family, I will tell you that your cat probably likes the dogs, and they do keep him company to a point. As a neutered male, he will probably do just fine if you introduce another kitten to the house. I would recommend another male. My male cats are the friendliest of my cats. I have them neutered at 6 months so I don't have trouble with them. Don't get another full grown cat because they will have issues. I wish you lived closer, our female just had 2 kittens! LOL

I don't see getting another cat right away being a problem. All cats are different though. The best advice i can give is to just hold off, and see how he acts a little longer with just him and the dogs. He may find comfort in the dogs and may not want another companion. Just watch his behaviour, and his 'ways' will tell you what he needs.

Yes. Cats aren't nessarily as much as a pack animal as dogs but they do need a kitty friend to play with. I have three and they chase each other around the house constantly. Although in my case I think the dog feels outnumbered.

Right now he misses his friend. Give him a little while to grieve. Then look into getting another cat. You may want to get another female(kitten) and this should help him.

The cat will adjust to being an only kitty, but, the more the merrier. If you want another cat, get one.

Stop thinking so much, if you want another one, get one. There is no, will they get on, as I know from experience that they will soon sort the pecking order out and you will eventually, as humans do, will mostly get on with each other but will not at other times.
