The one sure way to get rid of fleas everywhere that you are in contact with are pains in the butt, but they do the trick. First, treat your cat. Go to a store such as Farm and Fleet or Walmart or Petsmart and buy the product Adams Flea and Tick spray. Make sure it is safe for the cat/dog types since they do have products similar, but for a different species. Spray this all over your cat, thoroughly soaking it, basically. This kills the fleas in minutes.
Next, give your cat Advantage. Vet clinics carry them and right now, if you are strapped for cash, get one dose. Now that you took care of your cat, you need to treat the area where the pet sleeps and stays for most of the time. This is also aimed at the entire house, but these areas need to be taken w/ extra care. Wash the linens of the cat's sleeping area and go buy flea bombs. You need to set these all over the house since the cat does roam and can make the fleas travel. Set the bombs and come back later. (make sure the cat is gone along w/ other pets).
Before setting the flea bombs off, take a shower. Use the pet shampoo that gets rid of fleas (I believe Hartz makes one or two...). If not, then use something that will get rid of lice until you find one that does get rid of fleas. The lice is not a permanent fix, it kills some of the fleas, but at least it's some instead of none.
After the house has been bombed, take a vacuum and clean up. If you still see them bouncing around, do the flea bombs again. I have found that if you do the bombing twice, all fleas are pretty much dead.
The next day, give your cat a bath w/ the flea shampoo.
I hope this helps!

Hi Katie...fleas have a lifecycle and there are some inexpensive solutions, however none are as effective as using either Frontline or Advantage are ideally the best solution. You can purchase these directly through 1800 Pet Meds http://www.1800petmeds.com/cat.asp?LV=10.
For some temporary over the counter solutions consider sponge bathing a cat by using a damp washcloth with Pert Plus (not plain Pert) daily for a week...The human shampoo Pert Plus kills fleas but has little or no residual effect. In general, if a product contains pyrethrins and the label states that it is safe for cats and kittens. http://greyhound.marinar.com/html/faq.shtml (See section Special Medical Issues - 3rd paragraph).
http://www.k9web.com/dog-faqs/breeds/greyhounds.html#smp (fourth paragraph)
Products containing Pyrethrins are generally safe to use... Additionally, the human shampoo Pert Plus kills fleas on the cats, although it has little or no residual effect. Lather, wait a few minutes, and then rinse.
Be sure to thoroughly rinse all shampoo residues so that the kittens do not ingest as it may still be upsetting for their sensitive systems.
For around the home use Borax (boric acid) on the flooring found at any grocer or drug store...kills fleas both by causing dehydration and by acting as a stomach poison in a matter of minutes. In laboratory tests boric acid damaged sperm and caused miscarriages. Just sprinkle and vacuum up and repeat two weeks later. http://www.pesticide.org/fleas.html (See section Less Toxic Chemical Controls)

The easiest way that I know personally is to go to your Vet and buy a product called Top Spot (for cats or dogs), sorry I can't remember the manufactures name. Your Vet will also have products (bombs) that you can put off in your home so you can have peace, free of fleas, once again.
Good luck, Gayle (Hotdisch)

I have two cats who are indoor/outdoor cats, I've tried several products and I find Advantage works very well. The product is applied by drops to the back of the cat's neck. Since using Advantage, I've had no problems.
Do the cats first, then.....
For the house, wash all clothing, linens, etc., vacumn everything real well and bomb it or have a professional exterminator take care of it.

Get some ADVANTAGE from your vet, NOW!! The Advantage will kill the fleas on your critters and where they rest. It'll kill all the fleas in the house inside of two weeks.
Vacuum your house THOROUGHLY, then get some borax and sprinkle it all over the fabrics and carpeting. The borax is non-toxic to your animals, and the granules will rub holes in the flea's exoskeleton, causing it to dry out and die. Replace the borax after each sequential vacuuming.

-Bomb the house. Immediately. That is kinda gross. My mother in law had her house infested & my kids got eaten alive. The fleas then made their way to my house on my kids clothing. I was livid. I set of 10 bombs in my house & washed all of the clothing, blankets, etc... in the house. I haven't seen one since.
PS, Make you cat an indoor cat, OR an outdoor cat. Not both.
