How long does a ferret normally live?
Also I heard they have a really bad odor to them, is this true?

I can't figure out this issue with my mule and am on my way back to the vet aaaaagain on wednesday for another chiro treatment, but I am requesting more evaluations. This will be his 2nd opinion. If nothing improves, we are on our way to Colorado State University.

They thought he had a pinched subscapular nerve from a one time poor fitting collar. The vet recommended accupunture, I didn't feel the accupuncturist here knew what she was doing and hauled him to a chiro/accup about 4 hrs away. He did a chiro treatment on him, mule went on to blow away a 4H show and took all grands and 1 reserve in his classes. Then farrier came out, he went lame again. Its actually more a 'gait disturbance'. He goes from his swooping trot to a pony trot, doesn't really want to move out etc.

So vet fixed him again and farrier came out last week, boom lame again. Its a front end issue. He is lame when he pivots. Unless you know his movements, thats when you really see it.

I have a 14 year old Stafforshire bull terrier. He has a heart conditon and his kidneys are starting to fail...he's on daily medication. Someone told me that I should consider putting him to sleep as his quality of life isn't what it use to be.
He pees in the house, even though he is taken out regularly, it is too hot to leave him outside during the day. Am I doing the right thing for him? I love him.

My air pump in my tank broke and I moved them, both females, to a tank with a single male until I can get a new air pump. The male keeps chasing them around the tank. Would it be a good idea to keep them in there until I get a new pump( in two days) or would they be able to survive without the air pump for a couple days?

Thanks

so, i am thinking of fostering a dog that was rescued from a puppy mill a few months ago. she was diagnosed with brucellosis when initially taken to the vet. she has been spayed. i do not know what tests were run on her or if she had a blood culture done.

now, assuming that she has been on a course of antibiotics, what would be the risk to my other dogs? my other dogs btw are all spayed and neutered.

Is my cat going be sad or depressed if I give her kittens away soon. They are already 7-8 weeks old, is it better to get rid of them sooner or is it better to keep them a little longer?

We of course won't be able to do this forever because the new puppy will eventually be bigger than my dog, but..

My cocker spaniel gets crated at night- he's about a year and a half old. We recently adopted another puppy- a border collie/husky mix. The cocker spaniel is very much happy with his new baby "sister" and she crawls in his crate with him at night to sleep (I think he's become sort of a psuedo-mommy). She has her own crate, buts he whines so much when crated alone, and enjoys sleeping with him.

Is it okay to do this for a little while until she adjusts to her new home? Or should we force her to sleep in a crate by herself?

I used to know a vets assistant, and she used a home made flea powder concoction that was safe for kittens under 12weeks old. I have not see/talked to her in a long time, so I dont have her number anymore, so I was wondering if anyone out there knew of anything that would work. The kittens are only a week old. :-( and I dont want them to have fleas when I give them away, and I dont want to wait until they're over 12 weeks to give them away either. Could someone help, please? Thank you so much in advance!

I just read "A Pit Bull Face-Off" in the October 2007 issue of Reader's Digest, I'm not going to type the entire story out but I am going to qoute the main areas of the story and then you tell me what excuse is there to continue having this horrid breed in our society?
In Memphis on his way to McDonalds with his two sons Griggs saw: "A man was lying on the sidewalk, frantically kicking at two dogs that were hunched over him and snarling." "...58-year old James Chapple Jr was on the ground screaming as two powerfully built pit bulls dragged him along the sidewalk. Earlier that evening the pair had escaped through an open door..." "Griggs took out his cell phone, dialed 911 and told the operator what was happening. After hanging up, he decided he had to do something besides sit there and wait for help to arrive." At a nearby firehouse. "On the ground near the station, he saw a lead pipe about four feet long."

So imagine caught your stray. It's 6:30 on a Friday night and your vet is closed. So is the animal shelter. The dog is friendly but is thin, hungry and just scared. Maybe he's sick, maybe he's not... A trip to the emergency clinic is overkill and super expensive.

So now what? What exactly are you going to do with your stray?

This is an extension of yesterday's question about taking ownership and making something your problem. Plus, you have your own animals at home.

It's only one night. The shelter is open in the morning. Your vet is open in the morning. What could possibly go wrong?

I'm not bringing this up to scare anyone; quite the contrary. I want us to all share our knowledge so when it happens to you - and it will - you can take in a stray over night and not put your own dogs at risk!

Are you prepared to quarantine a dog overnight? Do you know what that means?

Have fun and discuss!

My puppy has been going potty in her cage since we got her, we had blankets & pillows in there for her, but they got soaked with urine, so we took them out, now that theres just a tray in there, sht still tends to go inside her crate, then just lay in it! its discusting and stinks up the whole house, we take it out & clean it everytime, and she does it as soon as she gets back in there! she goes potty outside everytime we take her out (which is a lot) but as soon as she comes back in, she insits on going inside 100 times also! is there any suggestions to get her to crate train? ive never had problem potty training a puppy, once theyre crate trained, its easy to house train, but she just wont crate train. HELP!

I have a question about Soft Paws. I am thinking of using it on my cat. She over a year old. She doesnt really scratch furntiture, sometimes the curtains but I think she grew out of that. Anyway, my mom always complains that she scratches our chihuahuas, which I never see, but she claims to see scratches on their them. Anyway, my cat loves her scratching post and I am wondering if she will no longer enjoy the scratching post since she will not be able to scratch it.. anyone know about this?
I basically would only use it to prevent her from scratching out dogs, not for scratching furniture... so I feel bad about her scratching post that she loves so much...
