I have a question about Soft Paws. I am thinking of using it on my cat. She over a year old. She doesnt really scratch furntiture, sometimes the curtains but I think she grew out of that. Anyway, my mom always complains that she scratches our chihuahuas, which I never see, but she claims to see scratches on their them. Anyway, my cat loves her scratching post and I am wondering if she will no longer enjoy the scratching post since she will not be able to scratch it.. anyone know about this?
I basically would only use it to prevent her from scratching out dogs, not for scratching furniture... so I feel bad about her scratching post that she loves so much...

Hmm... my cats used Soft Paws for 2 weeks, and after that, they never scratched the sofa again! It is a good thing to use. But, your cat may not like the feeling of using the scratching post with the caps on. My cat still occasionally used it, because she liked it sooo much before. Try cutting your cats nails, and see if that helps.
Another thing is, that maybe your chihuauhas are being scratched by something else, like maybe a stick from outside, or the edge of like, a bookshelf or a table. It dosn't always have to be the cat that did it at all!

God Bless!

PS. I don't recommend using Soft Paws for more than about 2 months in a row. After 2 months, see what your cat does. She may stop scratching the chihuauas. But even if she does not, take the Soft Paws off every two months to give your cat a rest from them!!!

PPS. I hope your cat is an indoor. With Soft Paws, she won't be able to defend her self outside!!!

I am not sorry if I cannot help you enough with this question, but I will tell you what I do know about Soft Paws. I did not use them very long on our cat because I did not want to keep reordering them when his claws outgrew them. He liked scratching the carpet in the door way of my bedroom and I thought the Soft Paws would help with that because it was shredding the carpet. The Soft Paws did not seem to bother him at all (maybe right at first it felt strange, but he was soon used to them) and he still tried to scratch the carpet, but it did not do damage- yea!
I do not think it will bother the cat very much when it uses the scratching post because they think they are still sharpening their claws.
My cat was probably just scratching the carpet because he was mad at us for not letting him go outside any more. He is not scratching the carpet now because he goes outside again.
Anyway, they are worth a try if you are having a bad problem with a cat scratching anything.

Do you trim her nails? If not, you can try that as an option first. Trim the sharp points off without going to far down the nail. Maybe ask for advice from your vet the first time you cut them.

That way, if she is playing with dogs and accidenty scratches them, it won't be sharp and will not leave marks.

Try trimming her claws so that they are not very pointy. Use a regular clipper, just don't trim very deep, only the pointy edge. This way, even if sshe scratches teh dogs she doesn't create really bad cuts. As for the softpaws, you need to trim her claws to put those on anyway, I think, so try the trimming alone first.
