I used to know a vets assistant, and she used a home made flea powder concoction that was safe for kittens under 12weeks old. I have not see/talked to her in a long time, so I dont have her number anymore, so I was wondering if anyone out there knew of anything that would work. The kittens are only a week old. :-( and I dont want them to have fleas when I give them away, and I dont want to wait until they're over 12 weeks to give them away either. Could someone help, please? Thank you so much in advance!

Products are a lot more advanced now and safer than they use to be. You can use Revolution, Advantage or Frontline Spot on treatments on kitten from 6 weeks of age.

There's only one product that's safe to use on kittens this young, and it's Frontline Spray. This is safe to use on kittens and puppies from 2 days of age.

You've probably noticed you can't find anything in pet stores for animals under 12 weeks old. This is due to pet store products being unsafe as well as not working - they have to advertise a higher age threshold in an attempt to be safer!

Veterinary spot-ons can be used from 8 weeks of age but as I say, it's Frontline Spray for you. Pop in to get some.

Just to pre-empt other people's answers to this one, don't be wasting your time bathing the kittens in Dawn dish soap or trying to get all the fleas with a comb - you won't be able to get the eggs because they're microscopic, for one thing. The ONLY reason to bath a kitten is if they have such a very bad, heavy flea infestation that they can't even wait a few hours for you to pop to a vets and get some proper treatment.

I work at a cat shelter and we use Advantage on two week old kittens and moms all the time. It is safer than bathing and safer than flea anemia. Never had a problem.

Powder is CRAP and causes problems with the respiratory tract. Not a good idea.

Maybe call the vet and ask!!!!!! Next time, TREAT BEFORE KITTENS ARE BORN!

Use gauze pads dipped in rubbing alcohol. It kills the fleas immediately. Then u need to bathe them. If they are literally crawling with them (no pun intended) u can take them to the vet.. they have a special shot that they can give that will kill all the fleas instantly. It is safe for kittens above the age of 3 weeks. Remember, this will not keep the fleas from coming back. You will need to treat them with flea treatment from the vet as soon as you can. DO not buy the over the counter stuff. It will not work and can hurt your kittys.

Do you know for sure that they have fleas? You can take a flea solution spray it on a dishcloth and wrap the kitten in it for about 5 minutes. Make sure the head is exposed. Then take the cloth off and use a flea comb to get rid of any fleas that are left. Make sure you treat the area that they are sleeping in as well.

Good luck!
