My parents are in TN and when I went to visit I noticed the dog they keep outside is covered in fleas. He has very little hair left and the fleas are VERY visable and gourged. He seems to be getting thin as well because of it... anemic? They have very little money. Are there any home remedies that can be used? They give him weekly flea baths but it does not help, since he is outside.

I just came back from a bike ride. I was going really fast when out of the corner of my left eye I saw a squirrel running toward me from the left. He didn't stop. Ran right between my two tires and we were both going as fast as we could. Incredible.

I am just wondering, when was the last time you were at an animal shelter? I was there today, dropping off a rescue at their clinic to have fixed. (I have to pick her up in 2 hours.)

When I was there, County Animal Control brought them in 3 stray dogs! They looked so scared and sad! It broke my heart!

Have you ever walked around and saw their animals? Do you realize how hard those folks work to insure the animals are socialized and healthy?

Anyone want to tell me your experiences or feeling?

My 5 month old kitten is a completely indoor cat. About a month ago he got outside and got fleas. Since then we have given him two flea baths, MULTIPLE dustings with flea powder and a Hartz gel treatment. Thus right now, he still has a couple fleas. Everything we use on him and our carpet says it kills fleas and larvae plus eggs and the shampoo says it keeps flea eggs from hatching for a month, which is pretty much what the gel treatment says too. I am really not prepared for this ongoing epidemic right now and I don't think it's fair to the cat to keep him locked away from my kids and their toys and also not fair to keep this problem around my kids. I don't have the money at this moment to get something like advantix and even if I did, at this point I don't know if it would work given everything else we've done.

So, I went to the PETA website thinking maybe I could buy something off of it to support their organization. I was completely appalled to see the horrific, disgusting, unreal pictures they have on their front page. I understand they want to let people know what going on but I couldn't even look at their page, it almost made me vomit. I want to support an organization for animal rights that doesn't go to such disgusting extremems, I may agree with their principles but not their tactics.

Ok, some one brought a puppy to work today that was just treated for scabbies yesterday. I was petting it before I knew it had them. Should I be worried about taking them home to my puppies. I washed my hands really good. But is it easily transmitted, like on your clothes and things like that?

I think most of these people are either too stupid or too young to be pet owners. If it is the latter, then where are the parents?

I just read an article that was really upsetting. It stated that Alex, an African Grey made famous by Dr. Irene Pepperberg and her research with him, was found dead in his cage Friday. If you have never heard of him I would recommend you look him up. He was just incredible and I think any bird owner learning about him will become more proud of their own pet and encouraged to spend more time with them...which brings me back to my favor...

Could you just spend a little extra time with your birds today? You never know when it will be their last day and you know you would miss them terribly if you woke up tomorrow and they were gone.

Since I got slammed for answer I gave about feeding a horse treats, I would like to comment on this. Giving a horse treats only makes the owner feel better. Not the horse. It does not make him love you more. They can eat out of your hand and kick you with the same emotion. In fact it can backfire, when he is trying to shake more food out of his "living" feed trough (you). Not to mention the colic than can occur, or a host of other things that can happen that can result in a huge vet bill. In my opinion, since your horse gave up his freedom for you, the best "treat" you can give him is your time. Instead of running out and spending half and hour a day and then giving a treat, spend time with your horse riding, exercising, and grooming him. Think about which way you would like to be treated. 1/2 hour and an apple or two hours (or more) enjoying time out of a stall or paddock with the owner / rider. Might give you a different outlook on the "treat" thing.

I'm not talking about strays or nuisance animals. What is the biggest reason people leave their pets?

My cat has been suffering for over two years now. He had a tumor behind his eye that made his eye swell up and the side of his face...we had his eye removed and we thought we got the tumor out, but its back again and BIGGER then ever. My dad insists that the cat is not in any pain, but everytime I look at him i know he is hurting horribly. The tumor has made the side of his head bulge out at least 3 inches, and it is now creeping over to the other eye. I want to put my cat down so he won't be in pain anymore(we aren't giving him any medicine at all, and the vet said there is nothing else they can do), but my dad will not let me. He keeps telling me that Tumors don't hurt that cat, and that he wants him to die a peaceful death. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me prove that this tumor is putting my cat in a lot of pain, so I can help him stop stuffering. I normally wouldn't want to put my cat down, but if you saw him you would understand.

What i'm asking for is Proof that tumors hurt cats.

My cat's favorite toy is a bright green plastic fly swatter, she kicks it and bites it and has a great time playing with it. She has lots of other toys but this one is her favorite.

I obtained a tadpole that is 6 inches long! He already has powerful back legs which are darkly stripped and webbed. He is a very light brownish color. His tail is also speckled... He also has a spot on one side of his body and two whiteish protruding stripes coming down from it... What type of frog might he be?? He could be from anywhere so even geography won't help me to figure it out...

I work at a petstore and it came in by accident with a shipment of goldfish... My manager says we fly them in from China, but I don't think I believe her... so I'm not really sure where he came from. He's just so huge and such a strange color for a tadpole (or atleast of the ones I've ever seen) He's too light in color...

I just bought a 29 gallon fish tank and set it up Sunday evening. When we set it up the 29 gallon air pump was not working so we were using a 10. I read somewhere that the tank didn't really need an air pump if it had a filter which it does. We got three zebra danios to start cycling the tank on Tuesday however we noticed that the fish were doing fine for a while and then they started hanging out at the top of the aquarium, shortly after they died. Not sure if this is due to the 10 gallon air pump or what?? The next day we emptied all the water, bought a 20-60 gallon air pump and put a bubble stone in the tank and another bubble thing in an aquarium decoration. I need to know what else I should do and how to cycle the aquarium correctly?
It is my first time owning an aquarium. I also need ideas on fish types to put in an aquarium.. I want molly fish but am wondering what else could go with them? gouramis? catfish? angel fish?
