i know when dogs pant it means they r hot and because they cant sweat thats the only way they can cool down but does it also mean that they need a drink of watter?

I have a 55 gallon fish tank that we aquired second hand. Despite my best efforts, I've been unable to keep freshwater fish alive in it. We've cycled the tank, the water chronically tests fine, I do proper water changes, and I always add the required chemicals and additives. Still, the fish keep dying.

Is it possible that the tank itself is sick? I'm using new gravel, but the under water filter that came with the tank. The external filter is used, but the filters themselves are new. All the tank's fixtures are new. The fish were purchased at two different stores.

The only signs of illness comes on the dead fish bodies. They look bruised, as if they have internal bleeding, but this only presents AFTER the fish has died.

I wonder if the previous owner washed the tank with soap but I have no way to know for sure. Any advice on what could be going on?

I have a large problem with magpies, I live on an acerage but am quite close to other residences so shooting them with a 12 guage is a bit out of the question. They do kill alot of young songbirds as well as raid the nests for the eggs.

I got home from breakfast this morning and the puppy AND birds had gotten out of their respective rooms (birds know how to open doors and had probably let the dog out).

Puppy was chewing on an avicake treat which I'd given the cockatoos earlier.

This, or high quality bird pellets won't HURT her, will it?

(I know this is a stupid question, I would just hate to hear that Sunflower seeds and honey are toxic to dogs or something).

She is usually pretty good but sometimes she just goes without even trying to hold it or go to the door. I've trained several puppies but never had this problem repeatedly occur. She also chews when we are not home.
