My sump pump was running nonstop, so I unplugged it and made sure the float wasn't stuck or anything, and now instead of sucking water it seems to be shooting it out. My well pit is quickly getting flooded. Do I need a new sump pump now or is it an easy fix. It is shooting it out down where it is supposed to be sucking in.

Something i could just spray in the cracks between the two balcony doors would be good, my land lady was supposed to fix them but she hasn't and winter is almost here and i need something that will last all winter, oh and something that requires very little work to install.

In our home we are renting we have an open fireplace with no blowers, (that I can find anyways) All we have is 4 vents around the opening. It doesn't seem to be producing much heat which doesn't surprise me since there is no way to circulate the heat. I was thinking of putting a fan in front of the fireplace to help blow the heat around the room. Does anyone have any suggestions or am I just wasting my time.

This will be my first winter with gas central heating. I have been given advice that it is cheaper to leave it on continuously on a comfortable 20 degrees C (when in the house) rather than having it come on for three hours at 23 degrees C in the morning from cold, then cool back down, then on for four hours in the evening, again from cold. Is this true? It is a two bedroom open plan detached house.

2 story townhome, both main floor and upstair are unlevel, but not right above eachother so I don't think there is one specific problem. I think the span maybe just too wide as the ares of sagging are below walls and below the kitchen. Who should I contact to complete this work in the most reliable fashion? Should I bring in a home inspector or structrual engineer of just go stright to a general contractor? ANy help would be appreciated. Any referrals in Chicago would be great as well.

I was considering getting into this as I am a good project manager... mostly expanding existing houses; anyone out there have any stories, good or bad?

Is it profitable?

I moved in this past Feb; the seller told us that if the septic field was still wet in the summer that he would fix it? So the contract states that if it is broken, then he covers the cost of getting it fixed. So, we called a septic fixer guy, but, now we can't find or locate the seller? Should we just cut our losses and pay for it ourselves, or how could I locate him if I don't have his phone, address, ect?

I have an Admiral heavy duty dryer that does not dry well. If it's a small load it does ok, but forget about large loads, they need to go for 2 cycles, sometimes more! You know what it sounds like when you have overalls, or something that has buckles on it in the dryer? Like loose change, well thats what my dryer sounds like, but without those things being in it. I've cleaned the filter on the inside and outside. Any ideas?

Under the edge of my built-in tub corner tub, the 5 piece faucet set (h,c,tap, diverter, shower) is positioned, it has a valve akin to a tub/shower valve, and so it's cramped and the tub is glued in etc. so I can't move it, but the shower hose nut is dripping slightly, and there's only about 2.5" horizontal and about 30 degrees vertical swingroom in which to work! I think my construction guy installed it without plumber's tape--he has a "thing" about using it, he said when there's rubber washers there's no need but I always do, and I wish he had!!!
What do I do to fix this?? Thanks!

The plastic UV filter on my desk lamp broke in half. Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement for it because you're not supposed to use the lamp without the filter or else it will emit UV rays. Plus...I don't want to buy a whole new lamp because the lamp still works fine.

Thanks.

Septic system bacteria, such as Rid-X, is very expensive to use on a regular basis, so I was wondering if I can produce my own to put in my septic tank. Anyone know?

I have tried closing other dampers to other areas of the house, changing the filter, and even cleaning out the air ducts (professionally). I feel like I have to make the thermostat around 71 degrees to get the room to a temperature around 68 or so. It's our son's room, and he needs to be comfortable. Any suggestions?

I'am leaving for vacation for 2 weeks and I'am planning on turning off the water at the main shut-off to prevent any flooding accidents. I'am wondering if there is a proper way of turning off the water shutoff? Should I need to bleed the water out after turning off the valve(no worry about freezing pipes) or is it as simple as just turning it off at the main supply? Also will I need to turn the gas water heater off or just leave it alone? any responses appreciated.

This is my friend's machine which is a little different than mine. It is in "like new" condition, clean, seemed oiled, but when I stepped on the foot pedal or hand-turned the wheel, it just won't go forward to sew. Any suggestions out there?

Have Kohler 1.6 gal flush toilet... but have to flush twice because the water pressure is so low that it won't flush right the first time.

I have other bathrooms with the same Kohler model in 3 other bathrooms and they work fine. Only one is not.

I an unable to post my question, because I am limited to 1000 characters, and Yahoo says that "The more details you provide, the better your results will be." So, I have had to put my comments on a separate webpage, and so I need you all to read about my clog problems at http://home.gwi.net/~rdf/yahoo/2_clogs/ and provide feedback.

These days more and more women need to be able to handle the care of a home on their own, because it is so expensive to hire someone for every little thing and because there is often no one else to do it. If there is a man around, he may not know how to do these things or even be interested in learning.
So, do fathers who know how to do these things now teach their daughters?

Is the fascia bracket stronger than gutter spikes which are driven through the gutter and fascia board? Is it easier to put up a gutter with fascia brackets because they can be put up first and the gutter doesn't have to be held in place by 2 people to fasten it? Can fascia brackets support a greater weight of water than the spikes or hidden gutter fasteners which have one big screw that goes into the fascia and supports the lip on the other side?
