During the day i dont seem to have a problem but they have tripped out whilst asleep. My lighting,alarm,shower and cooker are all okay. It is just tripping all sockets out. It doesnt flick off the seperate switches for upstairs and downstairs but the larger switch.I cant understand this as during the night very little curent is surely being used.
Please help.

You have an RCD switch. It works on a current imbalance between live & neutral, not a total current.

prime culprits for tripping it;

Heater elements: immersion, kettles, steam irons, ovens
Motors: CH pumps, fridges/freezers.

But concerned that it doesn't take out the shower though. Sounds as if it could have been installed on the wrong side of the board.

it's something that is on a timer that comes on at night. Whatever this is it may have a damp problem in it or a damaged cord etc on it. The switch that is tripping is called an RCD and trips to stop electric shock or fire. It is probably quite a simple problem but finding it could be the hard part. there is a procedure for finding the problem but better to let a spark do it. I would be concerned that your shower is not switched off when this RCD trips unless it is on its own seperate RCD (RCBO to be correct.)

A number of things here
maybe there is an appliance that is shorting out that switches on at night - it is not a high power issue.
or it could be mice.... or a damp problem somewhere in the house.

if this happens every-night - systematically remove ALL items from the electrical system for one night and see if it is the 'empty' system itself or a plugged in item.
things like central heating timers, freezers etc could cause this..

In this case..it is tripping the "main breaker", as you described as the larger switch...I presume that at night is also when your running your heat source...The main breaker is probably weak and simply needs replaced...They simply get weak after years of use..and trip when items like heat are ac is running the most...

* Sounds like a timer that comes on at night. Possibly on an outside circuit? Did something get wet?
