Turn off the main valve where it comes into your house. If you have a well, turn off the power to it. Open a faucet to relieve the line pressure. You can just turn off the power to the furnace. There should be a switch on the side of it. At the water heater, turn the knob on the top of the gas valve to PILOT. This way, when you come back, turn the water back on and the gas valve to on. You will not have to re-light the pilot.

Sounds like you live in a frost free zone because you are not concerned about freezing pipes if the heat is shut off. If so, you can turn the valve off at the meter box and leave the water in the hot water tank and just turn the control to the gas supply to the off position, I would do the same with the heating system. Have a relative or good neighbour check on the house every once in a while. This way you can have a worry free vacation. PS also have some one collect the mail and stop paper deliveries as this is a good sign that no one is home Put a few lights on timers. Have a Pina Colada for me

I recommend turning off the main at the house (don't touch the water company valve, they get really angry and you assume responsibility).. If you don't have a freeze problem you can leave the water in the system without any problems but I generally open a faucet and drain some water out. Turn the water heater to "vacation" setting, or as low as you can set it. I don't turn them off unless I'm gone for a long time..

Just turn the water off at the main water valve, don't worry about bleeding. if a pipe bursts is will not drain much because it is now a vacuum closed system. just turn your water heater to vacation mode or low as well as your house heat (40 degrees F.). don't worry I am a snow bird from MI to FL for months at a time. Don't worry and have fun!

I do not know where you live. If in a cold area, turning off
water at the main will necessitate draining the water lines
in the house.
The Water heater should be drained and the pilot turned off.
if these things are done, make sure that water is restored
completely before water heater is turned on.
One thing, turn off the water at the curb and in the basement
cut off valve.

Sounds to me like you have either a thermostat or control module in the furnace go bad. If you have a switch on the thermostat that changes the system over from heat to cool. Set it to the off position and see what happen. The furnace or a/c should not operate in the off position. If this works, I'd say it's the thermostat, if the furnace still runs. Well chances are it's either a control board in the furnace that has went bad, or a shorted thermostat wire. Hope this help you.

yes, turn off the water heater. and if your going to be gone, and not leave the heat on, it's a good idea to open all the faucets, so that way the water wont freeze and break the pipes. or u can leave your heat on at 50*, you wont need to bleed the water then.( if u leave faucets open, don't worry bout bleeding the water aslo) nice having an advantage of being a plumbers wife. lol

If you're talking about the water shut off on your front lawn then you shouldn't...those valves might not have been exercised in years, you may break the stem and then pay big$$$ for the excavation and repairs. Use the shut off in the house. Don't touch the gas, there's no need for that.

You can just turn the water off at the valve but be sure to turn off the gas hot water tank.

No bleed is neccessary, however you had better turn off the water heater, it will burn out with no water in it.
