what rock said.... but shut off all the smaller breakers before shutting off the main , it reduces arcing.... when changing , they usally pivot outwards from the center ......and the pivot point being under where the wire goes and while the main is off , go through and make sure the rest of the screws where the wires are, are tight, the neutral bar and ONLY ON THE SMALL BREAKERS..... ONE SIDE OF THE MAIN IS ALWAYS HOT.... DO NOT TOUCH THE WIRES ON THE MAIN BREAKER !!!!...... you don't need the grease just push

You can if you want to. It shouldn't matter. Make sure you have the same type of breaker. GE, Square D and others are different . Once you turn the breaker off there is no juice to the wire. Remove the breaker unscrew the screw remove the wire then replace the wire back into the new one, tighten the screw and replace it. Make sure the screw is tight and the wire doesn't pull out after tightening If you feel uncomfortable this way you can shut of the Main breaker if you can see what you are doing and there is little or no inconvenience, this way everything is dead in the panel

It really doesn't mater. Be sure and kill the main so the bus bar where the breaker is plugged into is not hot. Pry the breaker out from the end where the wire is attached. They make a non-conductive grease that is made for electrical applications. Apply a small amount to the fingers that are attached to the bus bar. Be sure you check the wire or wires that are attached to the breaker, they must be good and tight.
replace the cover that goes on the panel. Turn the main back on and you are good to go. Good luck
