Maintenance & Repairs - February 2007

We moved into a house with a nice enclosed porch the length of the South side. The foundation appears solid, however, the roof is sagging and a couple walls are bowed. I believe this is due to the fact that there was no centre support in the original design, and perhaps the weight of snow caused the whole structure to warp.

Is it possible to fix this by propping up the roof and installing supports? Or must the whole structure be demolished and rebuilt?

Hello everyone,
I just wondered if I could ask you a DIY question. It is the hot water tap in my bath. It suddenly doesn't run anymore. It was all right last night, and this morning, I could still turn it, but not as much as you normally do, and there is no water coming out. The tap itself remains very warm. The hot water taps in the rest of the property still work fine.

It happened before, but in a slightly different way: the water flow from the tap suddenly got very small, but then after a couple of days, it went back to normal.

Many thanks if anyone can give me some ideas on what might have caused this and how to fix it.

I have a Coleman Manual transfer switch wired to my main panel for my generator but no manual. It was already installed when I bought the house. When I use the generator during power outages do I need to turn off the main breaker in my panel? What is the proper way to use the transfer switch?

When I turn the valve and get the pressure dial up to bar 1, it switches itself back on and is fine. It keeps doing this every couple to three days. Why is my boiler losing pressure???

We have recently remodeled our bathroom, from retiling the floors to building our own custom shower. But I have a problem. It is the bathroom that our three young sons use. They dont have the best aim and there is a constant puddle of urine behind the toilet. I wipe it up as soon as I see it, but the grout is getting white spots in it. When I clean the floor, the water turns it back to its normal color, but as soon as it dries, the white spots reappear. Is the grout permanently stained, or is there something I can do? The tile and grout were sealed before the boys were allowed to use the toilet. Thanks for any help.

Some of my radiators make an annoying squeaky, whining noise when the central heating is on - it sometimes stops when I turn the valve on the radiator up or down. Please could anyone suggest what this problem may be and how I can fix it?

Many thanks

What causes the outlet to spark when you plug something in?

All outlets have been checked by an electrician and were fine. Could it be static electricity, since it is winter?

Hi All,

We have a combi boiler and about 10 radiators but 3 of them ar eluke warm or cold.

We have tried to bleed the radiator but water comes out of all of them instantly but three are cold.

One strange thing that may be the cause is that when we _completely_ remove the bleed key from the radiator we only get a trickle.

All ideas welcome.

Cheers

Chris

Here is the deal... I run the dishwasher and it goes through the wash cycle just fine. When it comes to drying the dishes the washer freeezes up. The lights on both the heat dry and sanitze dry options start blinking and nothing happens. At first I thought this was normal but the lights never stop blinking, when the washer is opened there is still water at the bottom and the dishes are wet. To me it is like the washer never "kicks" into the next phase. By the way the washer is less than 1 month old and Sears is charging $65 to come out and insepct. As you can imagine I feel the dishwasher should work correctly when it is brand new...
Thanks in advance for any help...

I moved my piano and one of the wheel didn't turn and left a long scratch on the floor, not deep but visible. The floor is made of solid bamboo, not laminate. It's semi-gloss.

I have seen several answers here on how to repair a burnt laminate countertop, but they havent quite fit my problem. 1st major problem is i live in an apartment so cutting out isnt an option. Long story short i set a very hot metal pot on the counter and now have several bubbles and brown burns. Is there anything I can do to repair it (money is a big consideration). Im not looking for perfection, just a decent patch/repair job so I dont get hit too hard when i move out. Im kicking myself pretty hard for being careless so plz plz plz no nasty comments I already know im an idiot. Thanks everyone

I installed a self cleaning, hotwater tank about 4 months ago and now the water that is coming out has a yellow-green, (almost as if the water had been pee'd in) tint to it. Any suggestions on how I can fix this problem would be appreciated.
