If you're in the North where the weather can get pretty frigid (like this week) don't set it lower than 60. Otherwise you may not get enough draw to keep the pipes from freezing.

Why set it at all unless there are houseplants? I am sure if you have any pets (becasue you are in an apartment) that they are in a temp-controlled setting (fish/lizards/snakes, etc) - the only exception being gerbils, mice, hamsters or the like. If you have plants or an animal that needs a temperature controlled envoronment, I would say the lowest of 65, If not, then I would turn it completely off. You may come hold to a cold apartment, but it won't take long to warm up once you are back.

I always left the thermostat at 58-60 degrees when out of town in the winter. If it is very cold where you live, open the cupboard doors where your pipes are located - the kitchen, bathroom, etc. This way you can keep the temperature around the pipes at a safe temperature.

I wouldn't set it below 60. Even though freezing is much colder, depending on the location of the pipes in the walls, you may need the temp to be higher than you'd expect to countract the cold penetrating from an outside wall into the pipes.

Believe me, I just had pipes burst in my laundry room 2 weeks ago, and it created a real mess. The heat in my apaprtment was about 62, but the pipes we in an outside wall that made them much colder, and they suddenly burst. I had a foot of water on the floor, and pipes had to be replaced, etc...a real mess. Thank God I was home when it happened!

Setting it at around fifty will help ensure that your pipes don't freeze and that you will not have to use a lot of energy to reheat your apartment when you return. This also keeps any plants fairly hearty. Some people set their thermostats at fifty all the time, preferring to wear more clothing when indoors to paying for heat.

When i leave town for more than a week, i turn everything off, and unplug as much as i can, becuase even when somethings are off, they will draw electricity, like a clock and DVD palyer. this will decrease your electric bill alot. i would leave the fridge plugged in though, and remove anything that will spoil while you will be gone. but if you want to leave your thermostat on, i would set it about 50 to 65.

50

If you are surrounded by other apartments with only one external wall you can turn it off, otherwise 50 is pretty standard. Remember if you go below 50 and your apartment has multiple exterior walls any pipes towards the exterior will get much colder than 50 that's why going any lower is normally not a good idea.
Also my wife's apartment community does this with all of their vacants. (we live in the north east) Hope this helped:-)
