I have a Craftsman 53000 series 1/2 hp garage door opener that quit working last nigt. The service light is flashing in five flash series. Disengaged manual pull to close door, motor unit still clicks and does nothing when remote pushed. Any suggestions would be great!

53000 series doesn't tell much, as that prefix has been used by them for years. For future reference, go by the year of manufacture. Five flashes indicate an RPM-sensor failure (not very common) or an overheated motor. Unplug the unit for an hour, then plug it in and try again. Usually, if the RPM sensor is bad, the opener will travel a short distance (up or down), then stop. If that's the case, the part needs to be replaced. Motors rarely overheat in winter, unless you open and close it repeatedly. Let us know what happens.

Try switching off the power entirely to the unit. That will reset the electronic module. I think this model has a red button overload that needs manual reset. On the left side of the unit is a manual reset button, push that in and reset the overload .

Sounds like the drive mechanism is jammed. Inspect the track for obstructions. Unplug it and try to turn the motor by hand. If it turns okay, then it's a motor, motor capacitor, or electronic control issue. If it doesn't then you're looking at a transmission/drive issue.

Sounds possibly like an electronic issue. there is a small circuit board on the opener itself which controls the operation. this is a great site for parts and tech help for all garage door openers...parts are pretty cheap.
