I'm installing laminate and have noticed that the doors (4 doors) have a metal frame. I've read everywhere that I should cut the bottom of the door frame (to lay the laminate underneath) with a undercut saw but how do I cut the bottom of the metal door frame?

I've thought about using a metal cutting blade attached to a drill but I'm afraid of causing a fire!

NOTE: two of the doors have several angles in the metal frame that stick out about 1-1.5 inch.
I was told that a fein multimaster may do this cut.

Thank you so much for your help.

Does anyone have any suggestions???
I was thinking about using plywood as a backing and adding tongue-and-groove boards over it for a nicer finish.

I primered over paneling so I could paint it, well I took notice that the primer isn't sticking to it very well...the slightest bump to it takes the primer right off.

I have primered bead board paneling and didn't have any problems with that, but this paneling that its not sticking well too is just a plain flat faux wood paneling...any suggestions?

Should I scrape all the primer off and re-sand and apply another coat or will it be ok to paint over the not so sticking primer?

Thanks!

I have a garage that was converted into a game room. There's a pool table along with some other wood furniture in that room. When I bought the house, it came with a separate A/C unit (runs on 110V) and a dehumidifier that's set to keep the humidity at 35%. However, I have an issue with my electric bill, which is running about $450 monthly! The central A/C has been checked and it's running at peak performance. As a result, I'm trying to save some energy. So, any advice on humidity levels in the game room? Thanks!

We have a moist basement, with only one window.

I want to put an exhaust fan in my basement, to route the standing air out of the house.

Do you think this will help get the musty smell out?

Any other ideas?

In the past I purchased "polished brass" exterior door lock sets and also wall mounted porch lights for my main entrance to the house. I even spent the extra money to hopefully buy a good quality product. Unfortunatly, because of the outside elements. sun, humidity etc. the finish on these items no longer look like brass! A nasty look in fact. Okay...now I am replacing all this and I would like to go to a different look, say brushed nickel or such. Should the brushed nickel hold up to the elements better??

I do live way down South so the humidity and heat is a problem. Any recommendations??

Thanks

What are some cheap ideas for refinishing a basement? My family and I rent and we can never get in contact with our landlord to get the estimate on how much we can spend, so I have to do something cheap. I am just so tired of not having a room, and it has been almost 3 months. All ideas would be much appreciated!

I am just a crafts person trying to miter a piece of 45 degree molding. I have a miter box but my wrist is to weak to cut the molding. I don't want to invest in a miter saw for the few projects I do. What are my alternatives. Would a jig saw or reciprocating saw work? Thanks.

I am trying to stop a leak in ABS I know I can't use Stop Leak for radiators. I Would think that suchsimilure product existed for ABS plastic. They are new pipes, I a have a few minor leaks, I thought I could cure them from the inside out.

I'm adding a bar in my basement and always wanted to create a bar top similar to certain pubs and restaurants where old baseball cards or pictures are seemingly preserved forever under a thick layer of polyurethane varnish. The finish is transparent so you can see whatever is placed underneath it. I've tried doing this with regular varnish but it's simply too thin and doesn't set even. Does anyone know what this special finish is called and if there's a process to applying it?

Whoever built my steps to my basement must have been dropping acid or something. They are the most messed up things I've ever seen. I have to walk down them sideways so I don't fall. The steps themselves are about 4" deep with a normal 7" rise. They are a complete danger and I am shocked that the house passed inspection when it was for sale. Go figure? So, how do I go about fixing them so I can walk down them normally? Thank you in advance for responses.

Here's the problem....we're out of water and I don't know where to pour the bucket of water or how much to pour. In the bowl or in the back? I've never had to do this before.

I have a tile shower. I noticed that the bottom of one wall was rather "spongy". I took a closer look and water has seeped in and rotted some of the board behind the tiles. The "spongy" damaged area seems to be limited to a 2x3 section on one wall, and a 4x3 section on a second wall. All other areas seem OK.

What is the best way to fix this?

We have a large post-and-beam barn attached to our house, but have no door into it. I would like to install a door via a walk-in attic space we currently use as a closet.

The barn is staggered with the house, such that the floor of the second story of the house (where this attic space hits the barn) is 4' above the second floor of the barn. The 'top sill' beam of the barn runs right through the middle of where the door would be, and one rafter from the barn roof comes right down to the sill where the door would be. (the roof from the attic overlaps the barn here)

So my question is: can some framing be done so that installing this door will not affect the load bearning capacity of the barn roof? Can I frame around the door so a header carries the weight around the door? What about 'interrupting' that rafter?

I have a lot of experience with framing (new const) and general home repair, but have never run into a situation like this. Is this possible? Is it sensible???
