We have a room in our house that is more of an office/study. It is not a huge room but the ceilings are quite high. I have always thought about a huge book case. Kinda like you see in movies where you need a ladder. (but not a whole wall).

How tall can i built my book case without fearing it tip over, or is there a certain ratio where if i build it deep enough it will be okay. ok - dreaming i would have a 15' book case but how tall could i really realistically build it for a home to be safe not being a master finish carpenter?

This is a stupid question, I must admit......but....... I recently bought a replacement motor for my furnace. I took it apart, got the replacements, slipped the motor back into the fan and realized that I put the attachment brackets on upside-down. Now the freekin motor won't come loose from the blade wheel!! I can't get at the metal screws without freeing the motor and pulling it apart from the wheel! What can I do? Is there a magnetic force holding this thing together? My only option seems to whack the motor free.
I'm baffled because I used absolutely no force when I put the motor back into the fan wheel and now its stuck as if I welded it in there.

Anyone??????

Thanks!

Wehave heard that roto-rooter employees are turned into vampires and trained to bite when they hear the roto-rooter theme.
Is this true? Has anybody been bitten on a house call from them?

We are taking the tiles of the wall in our bathroom cause we are doing them up. We just don't know how to get the adhesive off the wall so we can put new tiles up. Do you have to sand it off? cause that would take a long time. Thanks for you answers

First off I live here in NC. My uncle built an amazing deck. Its a deck that was built for a large hot tub. It is built so strong and so tuff. It has cement holding up the post and everything. I dont know much about decks, but it is a really good job. Well just to be on the safe side he wants to get it certified and he didnt get a permit for it like he should have. The owners told him not to. But not he wants it at least certified. What can he do?

Thanks for all your answers!

I recently aquired a china hutch that may have been made between 1887 and 1933. The company primarily worked in hardwoods and were considered a high-end furniture maker.
Unfortunately I have to refinish it because of multiple deep scratches on most of the surfaces of the piece.
I've sanded the top so I have a clear look at the wood but I have no idea what it could be (I don't know maple from mahogany!). The wood is pretty light and has a lot of "rings" on it. The origional varnish was what I'd consider a maple or cherry color. Aside from toting a part of it in to an expert, how might I be able to tell at home? I've tried searching for pictures but I haven't come up with much.
Thanks in advance!

I am looking at using insulation to try and soundproof (or reduce sounds) from inside my bathroom. What would be the best type to use? The walls are stripped down to the studs.

I want to apply a concrete stain to new driveway and sidewalk. Home Depot told be Behr products shouldn't be applied until the concrete cured in 30 days. While Lowes told me they had no specs on thier Quickrete product. The contractor told me it would be ready for sealer in 3 days. So i'm confused when is the curing/drying process actually over?

I have some left over wax from some Chinese candles purchased at Walmart. I purchased some wicks online thinking I could melt the wax and make a new candle with the leftover wax. However the resulting candle flame would be very weak. I assume either this would be a problem with the wicks used or the use of left over wax. Are there different kinds of wicks? Different kind of wax? Any constructive recommendations?

I'm trying to install a microwave above my range, but a light switch is in the way. For the light switch to clear the microwave, I need to move it 1.5" down.

This is an older house (build in 1930's), so there will be lots of fun plaster and wooden lathe to cut through. :-)

I was expecting the switch box to be attached to studs, but I think that there are two metal "pipes" (containing the wires to the switch box) that attach to the bottom of the switch box.

I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to move the switch box down. If anybody has any advice, URLs, or additional questions, I'd be most appreciative.

I have a rendered shed and have painted the outside with emulsion but on the back ive painted on a water repellent .Im concerned that the fumes have crept through the render past the e.m.l wire and under the plastic black type underlay and through the ply sheeting and through into my room airspace.I'm suffering a reaction in my ears and have been told its due to something im breathing in,ive emptied the room of anything suspect but still have the problem. As normal i get absolutely everyone telling me how weird this is and yes it sounds it...but have looked on the back of tin and repellent says that it could be hazardous...back of shed is unseen and chose the repellent as there are trees behind it...any ideas?

Six months ago the concrete in my condo was acid cleaned, etched, and then painted with standard flat concrete paint.

I would like to find instructions for a "Do It Yourself" project -- removing the concrete paint via grinding...and then polishing the concrete floors in my condo.

I don't want to attend a class or seminar...just detailed instructions on what to rent / buy and what to do! Any pointers...?
