I'm trying to install a microwave above my range, but a light switch is in the way. For the light switch to clear the microwave, I need to move it 1.5" down.

This is an older house (build in 1930's), so there will be lots of fun plaster and wooden lathe to cut through. :-)

I was expecting the switch box to be attached to studs, but I think that there are two metal "pipes" (containing the wires to the switch box) that attach to the bottom of the switch box.

I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to move the switch box down. If anybody has any advice, URLs, or additional questions, I'd be most appreciative.

Follow-up to katefields1's question.

The light box is above the range because the range is adjacent to the house's back door (which is odd). It's one of those "open the door, flip on the light" deals.

Fortunately, I can turn on the overhead light from another location.

I could probably cover the light switch with a blank plate and cover it partially with the microwave. I'm wondering if that's something that's "against code". I don't care, but don't want to make it an issue when eventually selling the house.

Thanks!

If I were you, I'd just take the switch out and either patch the hole or put on a switch cover with no holes in it.

If the light that the switch operated is really necessary, I'd find another means of getting power to it, or get a lamp.

What kind of light is it? I find it odd that the switch is over the range.

Try Fordman's ideas to move the box. I think you found thin wall conduit, which could be hard to move, but give it a try. To cut the conduits off. you should pull the wires back out of the way, and then push them back in to the box afterwards. It would not be a violation of the electric code to remove the switch and put on a blank cover. To eliminate the switch you will need to connect the common wire on the switch, to one of the runner wires on the switch, with a wire nut. Install a wire nut on the other wire from the switch, to keep it from shorting to the box. Then put on your blank cover.

If this has you shaking your head, take Fordman's other advise and call an electrician. I recommend that too.

Since you can turn the switch on from different locations, it is a three-way switch. There should be three wires connected to it, be sure to tag them so that you can replace them to the right location. Kill the power to the switch before you do anything. These metal pipes, are they flexible conduit, thin wall solid conduit? If they are the flexible type, then you should be able to just lower the box and the pipes wont' be a problem. If they are solid conduit, can you find the other end? You may be able to push them down the inch and a half, or at worst you'll have to cut the conduit. Just be careful not to knick the wires that are in there.

If you don't feel comfortable with this, then call in an electrician and let him handle it. While you have him there, you can let him install GFI outlets in the kitchen.

good luck.

Trying to cut conduit with wires is not easy at all especially in tight quarters. If moving it over to clear the microwave is an option I would consider that. It would involve installing a box and running new wires from the existing to the new box reinstall the switch and blank cover the old location.

one thing to do is cut the switch out and use tile to go over the back splash area...as far as the wiring you make the call....i would probably cover it up
