Does anyone have any suggestions???
I was thinking about using plywood as a backing and adding tongue-and-groove boards over it for a nicer finish.

Actually you don't strictly need the PLY; especially if it isn't strictly supporting anything.

I do suggest tongue and groove Cedar or Redwood planks however; and cross brace them, much the the construction of a Stockade fence.

Far less weight; less cost; as decent aesthetically without the subsurface; which should be marine or Exterior Ply if you go that route.

If you choose to do a sub surface; why not go Concrete backer board. The tongue and groove can be as easily attached.

That would definetly work, but perhaps you could also forego the plywood and still use the tongue and groove. The tub's previous skirt was probably attached to the frame of the tub, both at the bottom and top. If you rebuild, you may be able to attach your tongue and groove to the existing frame, thus saving some money on the cost of plywood.

Mine doesn't have a backing of plywood, just a tongue-and-groove finish attached to the frame. Also cedar and such is a great finish that resists rot, but I would still put a finish over the wood. I personally don't care for the grey look of weathered boards, and by sealing it, it keeps a brownish wooden look.

just an alternate idea...

good luck

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/dAtN6
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

Thats the way to go. You may want to treat the wood after you're finished to avoid the effects of moisture.
btw - I'm jealous. I've been trying to convince the wife to buy a tub.

I just have a pool but my dad does want to get rid of it so we can buy a hot tub. It's very cold and there's snow everywhere. But I like the snow.

You may be able to custom order the newer style fiberglass/plastic skirting to go around the bottom. It may cost a little more, but it will last a billion yrs.
