I usually paint my item white, then take a sander ( I use a small hand held electric sander) but you could use sandpaper or steel wool.

Sand off the areas you want the wood or base color to shine through. Usually along the edges and a few spots here and there. Then you can leave as is or, I usually rub on a varnish to reseal the exposed wood. Using a light colored varnish instead of a clear product will give it an antiqued look.

Good luck

I've answered this Q a few times, and with no offense Distressed ana any color don't have to correlate.

With absolutely NO details at all; you might get a gazillion opinions?

I suggest beat the stuff out of whatever it is, then white wash it with thinned down white latex; then MAYBE clear coat it.

Again,.... with No details I wish you well.

OOPS my bad; SHELF....same situation however.
