I use 2 per side; 8 per tile; most especially on any 12 inches or larger. Sometimes I use ONE laid down at a joint where 4 meet; sometimes not. More than 2 per side is overkill.

I go through a considerable amount of spacers on every tile job.

Assuming spacers would be used on the outside against the outer wall, and the surface is square or rectangular, the ratio changes according to the number of tiles used:

1 tile requires 4 spacers: a ratio of 1:4

4 tiles require 9 spacers: a ratio of 4:9

9 tiles require 16 spacers: a ratio of 9:16

12 tiles require 20 spacers: a ratio of 3:5

On the last job I used 1/4" spacers for 12" X 12" tiles. Since adjacent tiles "share" spacers, I suppose 3 per tile would be pretty close.

1 to 1 because they are cross that goes between 4 tiles and a tile has 4 corners
