What are some cheap ideas for refinishing a basement? My family and I rent and we can never get in contact with our landlord to get the estimate on how much we can spend, so I have to do something cheap. I am just so tired of not having a room, and it has been almost 3 months. All ideas would be much appreciated!

With all due respect; the question isn't about how much you can spend, it's about what you intend in any fix up as a rentor; from the view point of the landlord.

I've been a landlord and a rentor, and honestly I was Ok with anything a tenant wanted to do, as long as I was asked first; and it didn't negatively alter the property. In your case it may be that IF you could connect with the landlord...and certainly there is snail mail, last time I checked, you might propose your thoughts? The landlord might be very OK, with having anything improved...OR NOT?

I guess I'm a bit confused about the fact that a FAMILY would rent anyplace; denying one of its members a space in that place?

Certainly even a decent landlord could tell you, SPEND all you want.

What you need is obviously going to be temporary.
Not knowing what you want or needs to be installed, I'll go with the assumption that your looking for some type of wall finish.

Fabric would offer you the most latitude.
It can be suspended or stapled.
Bed sheets and curtains are items that large and inexpensive; some found in thrift/resale shops.

Carpeting/rugs can also be used to cover walls.

You can find really cheap "paneling" in building centers and local lumberyards - sometimes as little as $4-$6 each 4x8 panel.
You could "hang" the paneling by drilling a hole at each upper corner, then use sturdy shower curtain hooks or wire to hold the panels to hooks/nails in the rafters.

Any of these ideas would leave the basement virtually unharmed and readily de-constructed.

the money that you spend on refinishing the basement will add value to your landlords house, i say leave it alone and don"t waste your money as long as you have heating, and i would say a bed and an area rug,you can buy a portable partition.
