darning socks was a way to renew your socks for a little more mileage. Seems everyone now throws their old socks away.

I just acquired a brass spitoon. It isn't solid brass. It's plated with brass or something like it. The price was great, but the finish is not. Can I re-plate it or do something else that looks convincing?

I'm in the process of closing my first home. The inspector pointed out the FPE panel (I believe it's the bus style) and explained the hazards. I read some things online and we asked if the seller would pay to get the panel replaced before we move in. They of course denied and said, "we can't fix what's not broken" After reading more about FPE it doesn't sound cheap to fix nor does it sound like something we should wait to replace. Does anyone know how much I'm looking at paying for a replacment panel? Or do you think I should fight to get the sellers to pay for the repair? Is it even something to be worried about? Suggestions?

I poured some straight into the bowl to get rid of some mildew that is developing at the bottom. Is this ok for the toilet or will it tear up the rubber rings and things? Could I put some in the tank or would that be worse? I left it there for a few minutes and then flushed it out. It cleaned it just fine but I don't want to keep doing it if it will hurt the toilet.

Our house has black shingles and shutters. We are about to redo the shingles and are wondering if another color would look better. We would then paint shutters to match.

I am just learning to use my sewing machine which is a standard Singer sewing machine. The stitches on top of the fabric are perfect, but the stitches on the underside are horrible, just a tangled mess. What adjustments to I need to make?

We have just pulled out 1000 sf of t & G oak flooring from a house being demolished. It was nailed in during the 50's, hand-nailed, large, heavy "cut nails." The nails were pulled out intact with the floor.
We're planning to re-lay the floor in a house we're renovating, and looking for a way to get the nails out of the tongues without damaging the wood strips. Pulling them back through the tongues would damage the wood. Any good way to clip or grind the nails off?

Or can some plumber explain in detail what a plumbing company does to fix an underground cast iron water line? This seems to be some big secret only a very few people know. How hard can it be to fix a cracked or disjoined cast iron water pipe? What is involved besides digging a hole, cutting some pipe, and putting some new pipe in and welding it together?
