I am just learning to use my sewing machine which is a standard Singer sewing machine. The stitches on top of the fabric are perfect, but the stitches on the underside are horrible, just a tangled mess. What adjustments to I need to make?

It sounds like the bobbin tension is off. If it is like mine you have to tighten the screw on the bobbin holder. It doesn't take much. This should be in your manual or try looking the manual up on line at the manufacturers websit.

You may need to adjust the tension, but first look at the directions and make sure you have it threaded right.
