I've got the same problem.
This is really cheap to make and really does the job.
Ant Killer Recipe
1 teaspoon boric Acid (available at Wal-Mart/Target)
6 tablespoons sugar
2 cups hot water (this water must be really hot)
Mix ingredients and pour over cotton balls
Put mixture in cottage cheese containers with lids and poke holes about 1/8 inch up from the bottom.
Don't worry if you have more ants the first couple of days after third day ant problem should be gone.
BE SURE TO PUT THIS WHERE CHILDREN OR PETS CANNOT GET INTO IT.
this stuff really does work.
It's cheap, works well and is not as toxic as comercial ant killers.

I've tried a lot of different methods, my house had an ant problem for years. The best way I found was to buy a box of Borax cleaner from the grocery store (you can find it with the detergents, sometimes it's called boraxo, or different names like that) 1.) mix 1 tsp of borax, 2tsp of sugar, and about 5 cups of water. 2.)Dip cotton balls in the mixture and leave them where you usually see the ants. 3.) DON'T KILL THE ANTS! The ants will smell (or whatever they do) the borax-poisoned sugar on the cotton balls and take the sugar cubes back to their nest to eat it. if you kill them they won't get a chance to bring it back for the others to eat. Replace the cottonballs with new ones daily. after about 3-4 days you'll notice you've got ants walking into walls and twitching around on your floor. That's when you know its working. If you put in too much borax they'll be able to smell it, so don't go crazy with it.

the biggest thing is just persistence; you have to not only clean but you need to spray your kitchen with bug spray, under the counters, under the oven, around the edges of the doors and windows (even the one over the sink, if you have one) and just keep that up until they stop coming around. try to find where they come from (ie. their entrance point) and either close it up or make sure you spray it, do some caulking around the edges of your kitchen as well. also spray around the outside of your house, if you can. you can get the same kind of spray that exterminators use at Home Depot or Lowe's but Raid works fine too.

this solution has worked every time i've used it, generally within 3 or 4 days. combine white sugar and borax, put on index cards or pieces of cardboard and slide into corners where there is ant traffic. keep it away from pets, but it isn't interesting to pets, either. you can buy borax in the grocery store cleaning aisle... boraxo or 20 mule team borax are two brands.
use about equal amounts of the sugar and borax.
