I think I need new carpet... I'm not sure what the rules are but do you think my town house association would allow me to have my carpet replaced without them knowing?

After it runs for a couple of minutes, there is a slight " hot electrical" smell coming out of the side vents. I unplugged it and haven't used it for risk of an electrical fire. Should I start shopping for a new one or is it fixable?
p.s. I love this microwave.

I am in New York. Do I need an interior design license from New York State? What is needed? Even if you aren't from New York, what are the requirements for your state? Are there any requirements at all? Do I need to just register for a sole propiertorship?

As we live in a desert environment, the standard gray gas meter sticks out like a sore thumb, and is very unattractive as it is located right at the front of our house as seen from the street. Are there any laws prohibiting our painting the gas meter a "sand" type of color?

Ok, folks who have dishwasher, let me ask you - Before you load the dishes in, do you wash them under the tap?
Those who dont have a dishwasher, would you rinse them under the tap then load them?

I just put them in. The dishwasher goes on every night before I go to bed, so its not like food festers in there but The Man says I should rinse them beforehand - this seems like creating extra work to me!!!!!

We have a huge herd of deer that live in our wooded neighborhood and every spring I have to work hard to keep them from eating my tulips. I LOVE to have the deer visit but I dont want them to eat my plants. Anyone know of a safe home remedy I can use to prevent this? I have tried human hair and it does help but it is a pain to do because the hair blows away, etc..... any other ideas?

My walls are painted a light lime green, and we can't repaint, but I can add stencils or something else painted on. Any ideas? I'll take ideas for furniture, bedding, accessories, what to put on the walls, etc.. Anything. Thanks :-)

Hi, I am interested in taking on a quick project while
I have 2 weeks vacation time.I have grown tired of my
old countertop which has to go but at the expense of
doing it myself. For the most part it is so outdated and
there are sections that has puffed up and you can press
down on it.I believe it was layed over wood planks because
I look at the overlapped edge underneath and count the planks.
I am thinking I won't have to replace the whole countertop
since it is not plywood or particle. It should be removable
as I am guessing and pried up with some tools. It is an Lshaped
countertop dimensions are side of the sink is 6ft6 in long,
and the countertop area is about 2 ft in width and about 5 ft long combined (Lshaped).Would it be possible to do this
with one or 2 sheets of laminate? what tools do I need and how long of a project is it? what material is needed and cost?
If it does not adhere all that well any improvement would satisfy
me.. thanks all

We're thinking it might be old...We changed the betteries.....And it don't go off for a few weeks....at a time, then it goes again. We bought a new one today, and will have them both. If they BOTH go off we have a problem....Otherwise we will only hear the old unit. We have a new gas fireplace, our furnace stay off most of the time. we have it off all night. Light it only when we're in the living room and home. I am worried it might be the fireplace. but doubtful. Does anyone have any ideas on this? COULD it just be our alarm unit? Our battery is low light is NOT on. Has this happened to anyone else? No, we're not experiencing symptoms of poisoning..

I was pricing pole barn packages at Menards, and they claim to meet my local 30lb snow load with 30' trusses rated 39lb on 8' centers with 2x4 purlins standing on edge on 2' centers. Is this a good idea? Would the boards under the trusses be much smaller than normal because every truss is nailed to a post?
I'm wondering about buying residential trusses, rated 62lb on 2' centers, would those pass my 30lb code if I put them on 4' centers?

I bought a clock from a clearence lot at a furniture store. You have to buy it as is, no returns. When I brought it home, all the inside parts of the clock are in a box on the inside of the glass.

PROBLEM...the clock came with no key. It is locked. how do i open this grandfather clock?!?!? I have tried to pick it, tried a couple skeleton keys and nothing has worked.

PROBLEM 2...I tried calling like, 10 locksmiths to come and unlock it but they don't service it and had no suggestions.

Help Please!!!

Foolishly, I let the chives go to seed. Now they are coming up all over. I have been digging the little bulbs, but there are thousands of the little things. I can't use pesticides. It would be easier to keep cutting them off above ground, at least in the grassy area, as it gets mowed every week, but don't know if that will stop those little bulbs from sending up new shoots. Do I just need to keep digging?
