As we live in a desert environment, the standard gray gas meter sticks out like a sore thumb, and is very unattractive as it is located right at the front of our house as seen from the street. Are there any laws prohibiting our painting the gas meter a "sand" type of color?

paint that sucker! we had to paint them on the new houses to get passed but that was a weather/rust issue. we use gray because it matched. its also an industry standard color. as was said.. whats the worse they gonna say to you

it is actually illegal to alter the color of a gas meter (at least I know that to be a fact where I live). and when I tell you the reasoning for this you'll all understand...... if your house were to catch fire it would need to be a universal color that stands out to your local fire departments so as to gain access to it quickly and get the gas turned off. I'm looking for a gray meter in a specific location against a green lawn. you don't really want to camouflage something like that.

I am not sure where you live what the situation is. In most places the gas meter belongs to the gas company and it is not yours to paint or mess with. Although you have to pay an initial fee to have a meter, the meter remains the property of the gas company.

Since the gas company would be the only one with a problem with you painting it, I would call them and ask them if they would object. If they say they wouldn't object be sure and get a name.

The local gas utility maintaincontrol over the meters. They have all kinds of regulations, and it is a federal offense to break their rules. The best thing to do is to call your gas supplier and nicely ask their permission. If you are going to paint it a light color, they might not object. But definitely get their permission

I've never heard of any such law; of course, the meter officially "belongs" to your gas company (unless it's a city utility). I have seen them painted to match buildings before, so I doubt that it's illegal, and it's not like you're going to move it so that they can't find it ;-)

It is actually owned by the gas company and it is only being 'loaned' to you - but if you paint it, what are they going to do? The worst that can happen is they tell you to paint it gray again.
