We had one of these on our old house, our's was for the Telewest/ cable box, tv and phone. Do you have this in your area, that is the most possible for it to be. In fact there's one on this house too, but we are on Sky now.

Could do with more info.
If it's close to the ground, with a single 'flat blade' screw in the centre bottom / front, (5in wide, 3in high) it's a BT Phone termination point for the under ground cable (Called a BT66).
If you don't like it / want it / don't have a BT line, don't just chop it off! Ring or email BT and ask for advice - you might not be the only one using it!
If it's higher up, 2in X 2in (no screw) it's probably also a BT Joint box. Squeezing the bottom edge should flip it open where you will find wires connected with small rectangular blocks. (See above for what to do!)
Most other similar boxes are cable telephone or TV. usually though, they have a logo or letters embossed on the front.
