First you would want to prep the walls... CLEAN them... If there is any sheen/shine use TSP (Tri-sodium phosphate) it comes in a liquid ready to use formula or power which you mix with water... the TSP will help clean and degloss the surface.
Second you need to figure out if you have a smooth surface, medium texture, or rough. This will help in deciding which nap rollers you will need (smaller nap for smooth walls and thicker for more rough texture).
Third it is suggested to use a primer before you paint. The reasoning behind this is to help seal the surface for painting and also to allow for better adhesion of your paint. ***Use a tinted primer if you are planning on using dark colors like reds, this will help with coverage (reds and all dark colors go into a paint base that is clear so the tinted primer will help get you half way there in less coats of paint).
Fourth Paint your heart out!! Use thin coats for better coverage and less dry time. Light colors will dry faster than darker. A rule of thumb for every ounce of tint in your paint allow it to dry at least an hour. Most paints will say 4 to 6 hours for each coat of paint, BUT that is in the best weather conditions and mainly thinking of light colors. So if you pick a color that has 16 ounces of tint you should let it dry about 16 hours (that is thinking of dark, remember light colors dry faster).
Main things you need:
Rollers
Roller cage
Masking tape (blue is the best)
drop cloth or painter's plastic
TSP
Primer
Paint
Paint pans/liners
brushes
clothes you don't mind ruining
These should be found at Homedepot /Slowes and other stores of the like.

Supplies: paint pan and roller and roller handle. . The roller should be short nap if the texture of the wall is flat(smooth). If there is a plaster, or texture on the wall you need a medium nap roller. If the surface is real deep and scratchy, you need a long nap roller. If you use a long nap roller on a smooth surface you will get alot of splatter.Buy an angle brush for trim. Lowe's has a small, blue handled brush that is light weight and fits nicely into your hand. One is for latex paint and the other is for oil. Be sure to get the right one. Blue tape for taping around windows , cover baseboard with tape while painting the walls. Once they are dry, take the tape off and put tape on the wall. If you are doing everything in the same color, don't worry about taping baseboards.
When you are painting, cut in or trim between ceiling and walls and walls and baseboard; then, roll on the wall paint (and ceiling) into the cut in part. That gives you a smooth, finish blend.
I would recommend a semi-gloss as it is washable. Eggshell is also, but not as durable.
If there are marks on the walls, use bin primer, sealer over the marks. Do not use detergent in your water as it will reject the paint. If there are cracks use either acrylic/latex caulk or spackling. Cover the cracks with a putty knife, smoothly. There is some crack filler that does not need sanding. Check it out, it is also quick drying. Depending on the color that is on the wall, vs the new color you may consider a primer and will probably use two coats.of paint. You can have your primer tinted, if you want to make the job a little easier.
You also need a drop cloth. I prefer canvas, but the cheap ones are plastic.
