General Health Care - August 2006

My left hand has very limited use because of an injury 15 years ago. I have no feeling in my fingers to my elbow, so I tend to cut/burn myself often, I don't think of myself as handicapped, just limited on some activities. Is it possible to get some kind of state help even if I do have a part time job?

I sprained my ankle 2 1/2 months ago, and it was a second degree sprain with bruising all over my foot. it took about a week before i could walk again. since then i still don't feel like my ankle is as strong as it was before, though.

i occassionally roll my ankle still, too, and it scares me b/c i dont want to sprain it again. like today, i was running barefoot in my backyard, and i was running up a hill, and so my foot and leg were kind of in a large V shape while i was running, and then my ankle was really sore after i was running and it has been sore all day. how long will it be before my ankle feels back to the way it was? should i still keep up with the "ankle strengthening" exercises my doctor gave me to do while the ankle was sprained?

I have a roommate who likes to throw parties at night. I need sleep, because I have 8 AM classes every day. I wear ear plugs to sleep (which works wonderful), however how am I supposed to wake up if I am wearing ear plugs? I don't think I'll hear the alarm...

help. a few days ago, i was noticing that my inner thighs have suddenly become darker than the rest of my skin. so i just thought that it was from wearing brand new dark colored sweat pants and the ink just rubbed on my skin.... but after a few showers and scrubs, it seems that my inner thigh has turned a darker shade. this is so embarrasing!!! when my boyfriend sees this, i will be so embarrased because it was never there before!!! what should i do?? and what cause it?? it looks like 2 shadows!!

I'm asking this question for a good friend of mine. Her son just turned 3 and she's been noticing some strange behaviors. He will be sleeping and all of a sudden throw up, then go right back to sleep. He has no other symptons, no fever, diarrhea, nothing! He did it maybe one or twice over the summer and she didn't think nothing of it, but now its starting to happen more frequently, it's been twice now this week. She took him to the doctor and the doctor wants to do bloodwork and also a catscan... she's thinking it could be anything from juvenile diabetes to a brain tumor. It only happens at night when he's sleeping and relaxed, maybe something in his brain is sending signals to his tummy or I dunno. Does anyone have any opinions or been in a similar situation? Thanks!

I rarely taken meds like aspirin or tylenol, but I've been curious why people take Tylenol over aspirin sometimes? Is aspirin harmful, or is it just not as strong as tylenol for headaches and minor pains? What's the reasoning behind why people do or do not choose aspirin for minor pain relief?

He was swimmin last week in a salt water pool. He does not seem to have any vision issues but he says they bother him and are itchy. He often seems to be looking out of the side of his eyes and it is more obvious when he is in the sun. I have given him "clear eye" drops but does not seem to help. I went to his doctor but he did not seem concerned but he is continuing to look out of the side of his eyes and he is bothered by it. Any suggestions?

Also, i sleep pretty well.. like i get all my hours but they arent the same hours each night! And I only got drunk on friday night, so if its a hang over it should be gone by now! Also I am eating well?? SOOOOOOOOOOO?

I just got back from vacation and I started to feel this dull pain in my lung area of my chest. I thought I had had this before like one little pain but now the pain happens about every two minutes. For various reasons, I don't want to just pick a neurologist from a list or just take a recommendation from my regular physician. Once before, I needed hernia surgery and I did a lot of work to find the best surgeon for this in my area. I read Lance Armstrong's book and I was amazed by how much he went through before he settled on an oncologist (and it was easier for him than for most people because of his celebrity). Can you suggest any tricks for reliably identifying really good specialists without going through so much trouble, or (if the suggestion is reliable enough) even with a lot of trouble.

Anyone have any ideas to relieve the itching and annoyance of mosquito bites? We live in a very hot and humid place and the bugs are rampant, but when my daughter gets bit, the bite site immediatly swells up huge and is bright red and of course itches like crazy. Nothing helps. We've tried benedryl, and the cream form, all other anti itch creams don't work. Anyone know of any home remedies or anything else that actually works to relieve the symptoms...besides not getting bit!!

I turned on the garden hose earlier today - didn't feel anything at the time, but now I have 2 puncture marks on my index finger. They look like pin pricks and are about 1/2 inch apart. We live in Maryland and have lots of snakes and spiders, so am thinking it was one of those... but which one? The area feels hot now. By the way- I am breastfeeding my baby- if whatever it was was venemous, should I be concerned for the baby? Thanks in advance.

My contact lenses make my vision blurry up close when I try to read. These are brand new lenses and this is the second day I have ever worn contact lenses. When I look at things kind of far away, it's clear, but when I try to read books up close, my vision is blurred. My lenses are Acuvue Advance for astigmatism. Is this normal for a first time contact lens wearer?

Oh and one more thing, I have worn glasses for 8 years if this helps at all.
